Skype

Has anyone here either got it, tried it, or have an opinion on it?

Seems to be pretty good... in theory. :?

have it, use it occasionally.

The sound is bloody excellent, especially when compared to the dross that TS kicks out.

However, ive only used it for 1 to 1 conversations. More people may make it cry, network usage wise.

I've tried to persuade my family what a good idea it is, but their opinion is that if it was so good, and cheap or free, even between different countries that everybody would be using it and all the phone and mobile companies would go out of business.

Their rationale, therefore is that this clearly has not happened, nor are said companies about to allow it to happen, so Skype "must be rubbish and will fail" QED. A self-fulfilled prophecy of stupidity if ever I heard one.

Part of it is that they assume that there simply must be a catch, refusing to accept Skype have covered most of the bases with even a range of broadband-connected handsets which work just like "real" phones - AFAIK, since they already have broadband and computers, the only problem would be that they can't use their existing telephony kit.

The other part is the usual "wait and see" approach - "We'll get it when everyone else has it" which is fair enough, as it goes. Back when DVD players came out, I scoffed at my Mum's continued purchase of pre-recorded VHS titles, to which she replied "these read-only DVDs are no use, we're waiting until you can write to them". I thought it was ridiculous at the time, but she's the one laughing now.

I have it, but only use it for skype-out since I was given a stack of free vouchers for it by a mate doing a promo :)

Handy for calls during the day since my mobile only has offpeak mins free. Its easy enough to use, and not had any issues of people not being able to hear me or anything, so no complaints so far. Doubt I'll be tempted once the vouchers expire though.

We've used sky for our podcasts for people to call in to be part of the show. We've had a 4 way conference call, sounded great.

Anyone wanting to call in to a Lanarchy podcast (when we finally do a call in show) add 'LNY HQ' when you get skype ;)

I use it, and I've even played online games with people whilst chatting. Things got a little hairy when we had around 5 people, but it was still fun.

That :above:

Because of the nature of skype, it'll eat a lot of bandwidth, which is where teamspeak and such wins, even if the sound quality can lack sometimes.

Skypeout + usb headset of cheapness + being in another country = win.

Got people to call my mobile for one ring and then I'd call them back in Skype straight away. I saved a fortune in roaming charges in Canada by doing that.

What is this magical codery you speak of?

Give me an example of a profile and so on, and I'll have a go at it if enough people think it would be useful.
