im trying to get network dvd burning working using this neronet tool.
It seems to be unable to find my dvdr drive on my server.
Does anyone have any experience with this program?

ADVICE: Prevent network congestion and needless hassle by using the DVD writer on your own computer.

Just because you can do something, it doesn't mean you should.

and in the case of neronet:

remember that dvd burning is pretty cpu intensive.
network transfers (especially using gigabit) can be very cpu intensive.
both of which will mean slower transfers and slower burning.

there's more likely to be some data corruption if you're burning across the network (= coasters and lost data)

In an enterprise environment with, say, 5+ computers, do you think that neronet network dvd burning should be used in favour of something like a remote RAID array or maybe a traditional tape storage system?

Now, I'm thinking not, but I could really go for a second opinion on this one.

look here right - i have a media computer that i built into a lounge tv stand for A2 levels. it has an old dvd rom, and fucked if im gonna rip it out the woodwork and mess it all up. However, burning dvds would be handy.

Ideally, i want an emulated (to network) dvdr drive so that windows sees it as a normal drive. that way xp MCE can burn dvds of recorded content.
In the absence of this, neronet seems the best alternative

Does it have a user accessible USB2 or firewire port? If that's the case, then get thyself a cheap DVDR and a cheap enclosure and do it properly.

If you wanted to get it working best in the long-run burning DVDs and the such, I'd say you'd have to rip it all out. Cos of what Berk's said before, DVD-burning is CPU-intensive, as is Network stuff, so it'd basically take an age to burn anything, you're nicer off having it all stored in a massive harddrive on your network, no changing of DVDs ever, you could put a DVD burner (They're getting dirty cheap these days) onto this Massive-harddrive computer if you wanted to put the recorded stuff onto anything else outside your network.

How about a Virtual CD or Alcohol virtual drive set up on the workstation with space on the server as it's filestore? That way you could appear to burn DVDs from the workstation, but the files would be actually on the server. Of course to put them on a real disc, you'd need to go to the server and burn it there, but you'd have to go there anyway to put the disc into the drive.

I have a machine that is exactly that already. But getting XP MCE recorded content to other machines in niceness un-encrypted format is still proving a bitch.

This is exactly what i want. However alcohol does not seem to be able to emulate a DVD-RW drive, only a DVD drive.

Anyone know another emulatior that is good and can pretend to be a writer?

im not gonna admit i was wrong, but yeah neronet will be useless if it ever works

But with the writer drive in another computer.
It has to be done with as little/no access to the computer with the writer. It is mine, and i dont want my dad crawling all over it.

i dunno if it'll work, but you can you just share the drive and map it as a network drive?
