USB Mouse borkage

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

USB Mouse borkage

Post by Stoat »

I'm having troubles with my laptop.
I have a lovely little wireless mouse. It's worked perfectly for the last three months, but now it's giving me gyp.
When plugged in it'll work for a minute or two then just stop- usually silently, but sometimes with a "USB device not recognised" baloon popup.

-The mouse works fine on other PCs.
-The problem occurs in both XP Home and Linux (LiveCD).
-Other USB devices appear work normally.
-It's a Microsoft mouse- it didn't come with any software that I can remove from Add/Remove Programs.
-I've tried removing it from Device Manager while it's working to make it reinstall.

Do you lot have any other suggestions?

The battery isn't very old.
The big red flashy light is still red and flashing.
And, as I said, it works perfectly well on different machines.

The MS Intellimouse drivers may assist. They've sorted out some of the spacking I got with BF2. Also they have a battery and signal level indicator under the wireless tab, but it sounds more like a problem with the connection between the base station and the laptop.

The Intellimouse software doesn't seem to make any difference.
Even removed the registry entries to horse a reinstall.

Yes, it does. Surely that would mean that either the mouse wouldn't work on other PCs or other devices wouldn't work on the laptop though? Aaarggh.

Same on all three ports. I don't have a hub, or any other devices I can connect it through.

Yeah I'd make sure everything on your laptop hardware wise is up to the latest date with patches and firmware.

The chipset is always one people never think of updating, but it's more important than anything else, especially on laptops.

What make/model is it?
