Reference Info
Our corporate voice server is open to public access, only the channels are passworded. We use the ventrilo client which is available for download on the Ventrilo Website at
http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php. Please use your exact in game character name on the server (see below regarding corp tags, for ISS members).
If this is your first time on our server please read the detailed information below in its entirety.
The address is:
sense.typefrag.com port 13313
Corporate users please check ABACUS for channel passwords. Alliance users please check in game channels or the alliance forums for passwords.
Note: The SBLive Audio Card has issues with multiple programs accessing it during high CPU load when using high quality codec settings. The symptom is the user transmitting
extremely loud static instead of their voice. As you can imagine this is unpleasant for other users. Using your onboard sound for microphone input, or a USB Audio type
microphone resolves this problem.
Detailed Information (Must Read)
Step Zero: Praxis Employee Standards
The voice info section on our recruitment page spells out corporate standards with regard to conduct and consideration on voice. Praxis Employees are expected to be
aware of and observe these standards on our voice server.
Step One: Getting Ventrilo
Go here - http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php - and get the Windows client. Install and run it.
Step Two: Server Configuration
Your Name - At the top of the window are three text boxes with a little '->' arrow next to them. Click the arrow next to 'User Name' and click the 'New' button. Type in the
exact same name as your primary EVE character with a corp tag prefixed in the format [PRAX] Lake. Accept the dialog and then enter just your character name without the
prefix into the 'Phonetic' field. You may use a shortened 'nickname' here for clarity, but you must use something that is obviously your character's name. Note that if you
ever want to change your display name you should use the 'Clone' option instead of 'New', as all of your settings are associated with your name and will otherwise be lost.
The Server - Now click on the arrow next to 'Server'. 'New', type 'PRAX' (or anything) in the 'Name' field, 'OK'. 'Hostname or IP' is 'sense.typefrag.com', and make sure you
change the 'Port number' to '13313'. There's no password, so leave that field blank. Press 'OK'.
Step Three: Your Personal Settings
You can now connect to the server and talk to us, but it's important to make a few small settings changes first.
Push To Talk - Clicking the 'Setup' button, fourth down on the right, will open the settings screen (You can not transmit while this window is open). Turn on 'Use
Push-to-Talk Hotkey', or else we'll hear you every time you cough or yell at your dog). In the box below labeled 'Hotkey', hover your mouse and click whatever key you
want to bind. Every time you press this, we hear you Thus, use something that you don't press often (middle mouse button, Numpad Plus, Tab, '~' or Caps Lock). You can
check the 'discard hotkey' option so that you aren't always turning caps lock on and off (or whatever key you're using).
Line Volume - Most people sound far clearer when their 'Line Volume' is not set to maximum, which is usually the default. Again in the main Voice tab under the 'Hardware
Inpux Mixer (optional)' section select the appropriate options so that the 'Line' drop down box shows your microphone input. Now drag your 'Line Volume' to about half.
Except for rare circumstances it will be best to adjust 'Outbound' under 'Amplifiers' if someone says you're too quiet or too loud, leaving 'Line Volume' at half.
Latency - To reduce the latency (the delay between when someone starts speaking and when you start to hear them) you can go to the 'Network' tab, change 'Voice
Stream Starts' to '2' instead of '4'. This really helps people avoid talking over eachother since you're a bit more 'in sync'. Though it is possible to notice a short 'hiccup' right
after someone starts talking in cases where you or they have a less than perfect network connection.
Events Notifications - Our server can be very busy at times so with the default configuration you will hear many notifications about people joining/disconnecting from the
server. Select the Events tab and set 'Users connect to server' and 'Users disconnect from server' to 'Nothing'. This will significantly reduce the number of notifications. I
suggest leaving 'Users switch channels' set to 'Text-to-speech', but reducing the TTS volume so you can still hear people talking when someone joins. Select the Speech tab
and move the 'Volume' slider down to about 20 percent. This should be a good default but you may find another setting preferable.
Press 'OK' to close the Setup window.
Step Four: On Our Server
Press 'Connect' at the top of the main button row.
Praxis Applicants - If you're applying to Praxis please join the 'Recruitment' channel and if no one is there, mention that you'd like to talk to someone on Vent in the PRAX
channel.
Microphone Position - Take a quick moment now to check your microphone position. Please arrange it off to the side so it's at your cheek rather than infront of your
mouth. If your mic is in the path of your breath you will transmit what can be very irritating mic-blowing noises as you speak (certain phrases worse than others, 'peter
piper picked...' is particularly bad). High quality codec settings let us hear your voice very clearly, and mic blowing noises all the clearer.
Check Your Volume - When you first log on and you're not sure how your sound level is, politely ask 'How's my level?', a little further from your mic than you might
otherwise think (it's better to be too soft than too loud). If someone tells you that you're too soft or too loud please adjust 'Line Volume' in 'Hardware Input Mixer' and
'Outbound' in 'Amplifiers' in the Voice tab of Setup (usually best to have 'Line Volume' low and the amp a bit higher, for quality purposes). Also, 'speaking up' on voice (in a
similar manner to the way people 'speak up' when speaking to someone who is hard of hearing) or even shouting which sometimes happens in combat is actually very much
counter productive. You come through much more clearly in a normal tone of voice with the proper volume configuration.
Criticism - Please remember that you can not personally tell how you sound to others on voice. When someone makes a suggestion about your configuration please receive
it respectfully and do your best to use their feedback to make the whole experience as pleasant as possible for everyone.
Channel Policies - Each channel has its own policy regarding topic, usage, etc. Try to keep on topic for whatever channel you're in (if you'd like to continue a discussion on
another topic there are Auxiliary channels available). Please be courteous and make your best effort to avoid talking over others. Pausing regularly to let others interject
instead of holding the mic keyed for extended periods is very helpful.
Comments (In Parenthesis) - There are many features of Ventrilo you may wish to learn about elsewhere, but a very useful one is the ability to put a Comment next to
your name. Press the 'Comment' button (right under 'Connect') to do so. Always leave 'send silently' checked, or everyone on the server hears a notification. Common uses
are 'AFK' when away from keyboard, the name of another character you're using, 'Listening, no mic' when you can't talk back, 'Not mining' when in the mining channel to chat
only. Anything that everyone should know about you at a glance.
