Dystopia - PC

Introduction
I've been mod crazy recently, and i came across one of the more popular HL2 mods a few days ago. The basic premise is that you play as one of two sides, Punks or Corps, the former of which has complete objectives while conversely the Corps have to defend. The games most original and probably best feature is the addition of hacking computer networks to complete objectives

Gameplay
The game allows you to choose between 3 classes, light medium or heavy, each one has 3 different weapons to choose from ranging from the electric bolt gun to the rocket launcher. The player also has to choose a number of "implants" that will help you acieve a certain goal, these are things like the ability to hack terminals and the ability to be almost invisible, all of which drain your energy upon use.

Generally, getting an objective will be a case of getting to a certain point and hacking a terminal while a couple of heavies back you up, something that is incredibly important as you are fully vunerable while hacking. Hacking in itself is great, when you get to a terminal or "deck" you simply press f1 to gain access, then it's a case of navigating the with your cyberspace counterpart who looks like something out of tron. Once you find the objective in cyberspace, you first have to open the door which will require you to use one of a list of tools, then you need to apply password breaking tools to the terminal which will then let you perform a task such as "open door" etc.. lastly you might want to put your own protection on so that other hackers will have a hard time getting access.

Gameplay is often fast and furious, and requires some quick thinking in the case of a decker.

Sights and Sounds
Graphically the game is beautiful, as you'd expect, the heavy units are giant robots that look more at home in something like appleseed, light units look more like ninjas (suitable when you consider they also pack a katana) wheras medium units are somewhere in between.

The interface is great, with all the information you need scattered around the screen, including a lovely border that appears around other players that indicates their team.

Stuff that sucks
The game is still in beta so there are a few balance issues, i personally think that heavies are overpowered, but considering they sacrifice a 16 second reload time when using a rocket launcher, i suppose it's not that bad.

The game is often stalemated when you're constantly attacking one objective but making no progress, this is good for the defenders but things do get a bit tedious unless you start thinking tactically. On some maps spawn raping happens a lot, but this is to do with map design rather than the players.

Conclusion
This is a great mod, and i'd love some 5punkers to come and play, being able to talk tactics and such over ts will certainly make it alot more fun. and if you're still not convinced enough to try it, consider that my favorite pasttime in the game is going around invisible cutting up enemys and hiding in the shadows, thats ninja style right there.

I enjoyed this mod a lot the first time round, however a lot of the usual random players were a bunch of arseholes constantly flaming and so on.

I haven't played the latest release of the mod, so I am unable to comment on the mod as it stands, but it's certainly one of the best produced mods I ahve seen for the Source engine, the only other one that rivals it is Goldeneye Source.

Nice review, you've inspired me to download the latest version and give it a go.

I really liked it when we had a go when the first version came out. I don't pretend to know what was going on the whole time but was fun.

How much is the full game?

The problem with GES is that there really isn't tht many people playing and until they add proxy mines, it'll never be great.

the current release is a demo by the way, there is no full version yet
