What SHOULD I do?

Been playing this a bit this afternoon, but I'm finding it hard to properly get the hang of.

Firstly, whats the deal with squads? Should I join one when I join a server? Why do they exist and how do they function?

Secondly, are there any servers that you guys regularly play in? Some friendly pointers ingame for how to start off would be most useful.

you should join a squad.

squads act as small units under a leader (a squad leader) to allow the commander to issue specific commands to specific groups.

when you join a squad, you may find it wise to change to a different kit depending what the squad is missing (most often a support guy)

joining squad will allow you to spawn on your squad leader's postion, which can be handy.

I would recommend joining a squad, and for the most part, I usually do. Here's why. When you're in a squad, you can spawn with whoever your squad leader is. This means, if you're in a six man squad and your leader gets up on an enemy point, or other strategic location (that's not any of the "permanent" spawn points), you and 4 other people can spawn near him. Squads can receive orders from the commander, and the squad leader himself can call his own orders if he doesn't like what the commander tells him.

When playing by yourself on public servers, you typically just get people who join squads and don't really give a damn about teamwork. They just take the green dot to spawn at in case if it ever suits their fancy. Occasionally, you will get someone who is working hard to do things, sometimes they'll even call their squad "teamwork" or something like that.

If it's your first time through, the VO guy has some good advice and can help cover the basics, but will be annoying if you've been playing for a while. Be sure to know what we're talking about in the "What I should NOT Do" thread (minus the fecal discussion). Also, just have fun with it because it really doesn't matter in the end. The game will have more than its fair share of smacktards, so just try to roll with the punches.

In my opinion the only time you might want to NOT join a squad is if you feel like doing some lone sniping somewhere out of the way or you want to go on special ops missions to destory the emeny artillery, etc. If the squad is full you could be taking up a place that could be filled by someone that wants to work closing with the rest of the squad. But as a rule of thumb; always join a squad.

As for good servers, have a look at the 50klicks website, their servers are usually full of people doing some good teamwork which does have it's downsides as you find yourself getting pwned as they're so organised.

I always either join or create a squad. If you can get some good teamwork going, your team can dominate muchly. As it is, the 5punk 5quad is almost always best squad, because we are all awesome, we at least try work together, and Ty doesn't TK us anymore.

I'm glad you said that. I shall keep an eye out for that when BEEF2 finally arrives (6 weeks and counting so far).

Now I have 2G of RAM I might give teh BeeF a go again. IIRC, joining a squad gives you more opportunities to get a good teamwork score (as medic/engineer/support) and boost your ratings/medals/unlocks.

Being a squad leader as a sniper is a rather bad move, as your squaddies spawn where you're hiding and give your position away.

Right, I've played this game now for *checks xfire* 9hours, and I'm not at all convinced. For whatever reason, its just not doing it for me at the mo. Best games I've played were the other night (fri I think) where there were a few 5punkers on, in a squad and playing together. It was the first (and only) time I've felt there was any kind of structure to the game.

I've taken to joining squads, but theres no organisation. I make a squad and try to organise, but no-one does anything. And having just been base-raped for three maps straight by a bunch of fucking point-whoring cowboys has pissed me right off.

I'm going to stick with it for a while yet, because I'm sure it just takes getting used to after the very different structure of CS:S, but I currently have a distinct feeling of 'meh'.

On a slightly different note, I was promoted to the high-flying rank of Private First Class today, so does this mean I've unlocked something I didn't previously have? Also, Berk mentioned something about getting someone with the expansion to login on your account to enable double the unlocks, or something like that. Anyone fancy offering?

Go lone and snipe, blow stuff up with C4, find another server, play another game or go and have a nice, relaxing poo.

My #1 tip would be never ever let a game piss you off.

The beauty of beef is that if you get bored (with the usual running around shooting people who pop in front of you) you can try another approach like Jack said.

If I'm feeling pissed off I spawn as Spec Ops, load up a jeep with all my C4 and go on a suicide run, jumping out and setting off the explosives right on top of the nearest enemy troop or vehicle. It's not usually the most productive tactic but it's satisfying and you know it's going to annoy someone if you pull it off.

BTW: It was a good game the other night

Yeah, in those situations, just find a different server. A lot of people start squads just so they can log time as squad leader. Try a couple different servers until you find a bunch of guys you can play with. Or just keep playing until people join your squad. Don't be afraid to dump a lame server. All you'll end up doing is lowering your stats.

also, lot of the good games are likely to be later ones, where there's only 30-40 people on the server. *just got a bronze and a gold star on such a game*

yeah i find that 30-40 manned servers are the best. also, i find that if you play with someone you know helps alot, cos then you'll be in the same squad and u can chat to them or whatever, then othe people will join your squad and if you dont like what theyre doing kick them. me and bob do this quite often
