The developer should move this into the 21st century and instead of ASCII characters, use emoji. My eyes hurt just thinking about it.

It's all about the gfx packs guys. No need to use ASCII anymore when playing it.

I used that graphics pack. Makes it clearer but the interface is still a challenge. I'm convinced it's deliberate.

Re: Tales from Dwarf Fortress
Yeah, it was never the graphics that were the issue for me, it was the obtuse control system that insisted on absurdly set up keys for every damn thing. Stick a proper GUI with mouse controls and menus on it and I would have been fine with how it looked. Im fine with a game that is difficult to master, but not with a game whose controls are difficult to master, especially when damn near anyone with the ability to code could do a better control scheme.
The devs have gone on record to say that they dont want to improve the interface because it would mean all the background changes that they enjoy making would take longer to implement. This seems to be based on some weird idea that the only choices are the extremes: its either ascii and keyboard controls or a full on modern GUI with nice graphics. I would be perfectly happy with the ascii, the graphics packs as they are done now and mouse controls.

Yeah i play plenty of rogue likes that use ascii characters for graphics, but i lost my muscle memory for all the hotkeys and between relearning that and the constant wiki trawling to figure out anything i struggle to find time to actually play it.

Some screens are mouse compatable now afaik. The military/squad one is supposed to be.
