I updated and tried it briefly last night. I was able to see and actually kill one of the opposition team so that's a vast improvement on the last time I played it. He respawned and killed me back while I was still gleefully shooting his corpse's head in celebration.

Woo! That sounds like a success. You die a lot in PS2, so deriving pleasure from small victories is good.
