Power supply for my system.

Post by Woo Elephant Yeah »

Okay, I have the following system, and I'm positive I need a better PSU, but I don't know which one to get.

Model : HP Workstation xw6000
1 x Intel Xeon CPU 2.80GHz
2GB (4x512MB) 2100 DDR RAM
1 x 34GB SEAGATE SCSI Drive
1 x 200GB IDE Drive
1 x Sony Dual DVD-RW 4x
1 x DVD-R
1 x Galaxy GeForce 6800 128MB

It works okay at the moment, but I know it would be better if I overclocked the graphics card, and installed a secondary identical processor.
I also have another SCSI drive I'd like to install, but by adding all of these components, the load on the PSU will probably tip it over the edge, especially as the 6800's are so power hungry.

From what I understand it's not just the power rating of the PSU that counts, it can also be the quality.

I've had a look at the following site Overclockers.co.uk PSU's but can't decide what I need.
Any info/suggestions would be appreciated, as it's not something I knwo a great deal about.

Oh yeah, by the way I currently have a 460W PSU which came with the HP XW6000

heard good things about antec and enermax, lots of money, but apparently very good.

still, i'd aim for a 500+ watt psu, bigger is always better though.

also, look at scam and ebuyer, you might get a beter deal. :D

hmmmmmm, I can either go for a cheep and cheerful 600w for ?17.62 from ebuyer.co.uk (pictured below)

or something that's better quality, but more expensive from scan.co.uk

Does the quality of a PSU warrant the price increase :?:

Bah, buy a quality PSU, and a couple of LED fans, and change the crappy boring non colourfull PSU fans for your bright and spangly LED ones.

You Know It Makes Sense!

Quality is definetly more important for power supplies, especially when you're dealing with Xeons and such.

You're a bit of a hardware nut, do you know if a PSU that's designed for a P4/AMD will work with an Intel Xeon?

Everyone keeps telling me to get a good quality one, but I really haven't got a clue which one to order.

I don't want to spend any more than ?40 if I can help it

It all depends on the motherboard you have. Some Xeon type motherboards have different main plugs than regular ATX 20- (or the new 24-) pin connectors. Look up your mobo manual and see what kind of form factor it is (i.e.: ATX, ETX, ITX).

my gut feeling is that it probably isn't but you may get lucky.
