Post by fabyak »

Saw this

Got inspired, rules are as such:

Have wheels on the ground most of the time
Make it to the end of the runway (ish)
Picshurs!

And post speed. Pictures if you want but I kinda trust you lot

[edit] It seems that when you crash it shows you your highest land speed.

narf he toughest bit I've found so far is making it to the end of the runway! Any steering at all along the way will destabilise it totally and end in hilarious fiery death!

Oh! Posted in the other thread, but here you go:

Attempt one!

Attempt two with more rockets!

Attempt three, attempting to stabilize attempt two!

Needs more thinking, maybe less rockets.

Top speed so far: 575m/s

Attempts so far:

Cockroach 1: Set off from the launch pad. Immediately crashed.
Bear 1: Small nose-mounted landing gear couldn't control the huge engine and back wheels. Span off the runway.
Bear 2: More engines and another small wheel at the front. Disintegrated on the runway.

Big Ass II has just finally made it down the runway (half an hour of "improvements" and I finally got back to where I was)

I think I will have to officially void my time as the one above as the land speed is faster than the highest speed (Had that happen earlier when it clocked a speed I clearly hadn't done) :(

Looking into the speeds a bit, the internets sez:

Code: Select all

"Highest Speed Achieved" is literally the highest "Surface" navball speed, in any direction that you achieved. It will be the highest readout you see in the "Surface" navball readout. However, it seems to max out at 750 m/s for reasons I don't understand.

"Highest Speed Over Land" is the highest speed tangential and relative to the surface. If you launch straight up, the speed over land is zero because you aren't traveling sideways.

So I'm happy to go with either speed, because I beat you. :)

During my latest effort which turned out pretty badly I came up with the second challenge. Smash as much of the base as possible! Use a car, plane, shuttle, whatever you want

Things I've discovered so far:

Solid fuel thrusters bad. Not enough thrust for the weight.
Use remote control module rather than crewed module as they weigh a lot less.
Pointy cones on the front.
Struts on everything to stop it all falling apart.
Landing gears for wheels (keep them flat, angled seems to make it wobble and that is bad). I've found 2 on the back and one on the front works best.
You can get away with having no fins.

Also press T to put SAS on. It helps a surprising amount.

Top speed I've managed is 911m/s (over 2000mph :))

Image

Driving this
Image

Upturned cargo bays as the base, Remote control dobber on the front, protective shells on the front of the fuel tanks as they're lighter and more aerodynamic that regular nosecones, 2 small landing gears on the back and a medium on the front.
And struts. Lots of struts

As it's a *land* speed record, is this where I tell the boys and girls that your rig carries on picking up speed off the end of runway and out over the sea? :P
