10,000 X1900's?

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Also, if they were able to make a card with 48 pixel pipelines just a few months after the released the not so good X1800 that has only 16, why did they not put more on the X1800? The decision to stick with 16 pipes was a big mistake in my opinion.

well they'd better star slashing prices, because the value of those X1800's just dropped a ton.

Also, for those not familiar with the X1900 series:

I just checked, and the prices on X1800XT's are still about $500. the X1900XT is $550. According to my math, $50 is not 30%.

The thing that worries me about any new kit is how much noise it makes. I need to keep my box quiet and all new gfx cards look like roaring monsters, my current one is bad enough. How noisy will this one be?

I haven't heard any news on the noise front. I'll probably find out sometime this week and then forget to share the info.

Arctic Cooling purchased and installed on my nvidia 6800GT as of yesterday. No burning smell as yet and it seems to be running nice and cool. :w00t:

Only problem is that I still want more quiet. It seems all fans, no matter the quality, still make some noise and with 5 of them it adds up. Where to go from here ... ?

you really have 2 options -

either go extreme cooling (water or phase-change (think freezer)) (take a loan for this)

or you can go for sound management, changing to less noisy fans, using vibration damping mountings for fans, using sound dampening stuff from halfords (like the computer stuff, but not a rip off) and of course, it's directional, put your computer on the floor with some thick rubber or silicone feet (from a hi-fi shop (or make some using mastic))

also, stop the fans in your computer one by one (use your finger on the centre to stop it spinning for a few seconds)

most likely the noise comes from a smaller, or older fan that's dying.

look at a passive heatsink for your northbridge.

I've already got/done most of what you said, apart from water/phase-changing cooling which I dismissed as being to costly and impractical. In fact I was thinking about writing it up in an article of all my adventures in my quest for a quiet PC and posting it.

A northbridge heatsink is out of the question as the new gfx cooler is right over the top of it. I forgot about that, so it's 6 fans in total.
