I would say eve is better value, and has longer appeal. But if you really want a bashing-fantasy-monsters-with-pointy-sticks game, WoW is the best.

Course, if you could get it for free... :)

It is probably the best one out there, in terms of things to do, career tracks, modes of play and interaction with other players - but I think the subscription is a little high on balance.

When you consider that Guild Wars is free to play, WoW is very expensive - but Guild Wars has limited persistent areas so is easier to maintain.

A better comparison is Eve, which manages remarkable technical achievements (everyone plays in the same persistent universe), has server upgrades in advance of most users experiencing problems (most people had had difficulties before the ongoing WoW realm upgrades, whereas only people who insisted on visiting the most populated areas of Eve had them) and is not afraid to quite fundamentally change gameplay to improve the experience (drones and lag) yet is still a very competitive price.
Apart from Eve being a radically different genre, it would be very lonely in space without the bummings.

Perhaps WoW is more server-intensive, costs more to run because they maintain multiple server farms and helpdesk centres worldwide, or maybe they just take a bigger profit - there's a lot worse you can do, there are some inferior games around that charge similar amounts, the only ones I have personal experience of would be PSO and FFXI.

given i've played all of them a bit.

eve is good, but overwhelming almost, and it's pretty difficult to feel useful in 5punkorp, so it didn't hold my attention for long.

so far WoW (ran with a server emulator locally) is seeming fun, but i'm not sure how long it'll last with 4 million children running around shouting omfgbbqwtflol

it is rather overwhealming, but the flip side of that is you dont get the feeling that you have done everything worth doing after a week or two, which I tend to with the easier to get into games such as WoW.

this, hard. I ended up turning off the local chat thing when i was on beta, and that was with a relatively small number of pillocks playing. This causes one of my main complaints with the "classic" style of MMO; They dont feel like its Massively Multiplayer. They feel like a whole load of people playing a single player game all at the same time.

:above: This, overwhelmingly. I gave WoW a good shot. It was kinda fun for a while, despite the omgwtflol crowd who got consistantly more annoying the longer I played. Frankly it didn't have enough to tempt me to keep playing. It very soon became a grind and I suddenly found myself getting bored very quickly, effectively playing a single player, linear game that lots of other people had already done.

Eve OTOH has kept me hooked for over 3 months already and there is no end in sight. And I have only scratched the tip of the iceberg of what is available to do in game. And unlike all other MMO's out there, Eve lets the players change the environment they play in - nearly the whole thing is player driven. That's worth paying for.

seeems like eve it is then, i realy cant be arsed with the 12 year old factor, and i spose you have a point with the 'classic mmo' thing. does it actualy take skill to fly and dogfight in eve or is it just always a case of biggest ship wins? or in other words, will i need a joystick or will keyboard do ok?
