Superhero sequels are the worst kind of sequels. Ok, second to teen slasher sequels. And Twilight. My point is I find origin stories or stories that introduce a superhero and their powers for the first time so much more interesting that I just can't get enthused about Thor 2, despite how much I liked Thor.

See, im completely the opposite. I much prefer it when the origin of the hero has been established, he has been through all the searching and discovering himself stuff and can get on with actual heroing. Largely that's because all origin stories are essentially the same: someone gets powers/abilities, at first they are a bit clumsy/untrusting of them but by the end of the film they have become the hero you were waiting the whole damn film for. Somewhere around the middle of that a bad guy will show up, and their being beaten will be the thing that finally makes the hero. Bad guys fate may or may not be undetermined at the end depending on sequel possibilities.

Once you have got that out of the way the world is your oyster, you can tell whatever kind of story you want as long as it is one that contains a hero.

This does leave me somewhat frustrated by superhero movies, as they don't seem to be able to get away from origin movies. We have seen Batman start up twice now, and rumour is that we will see another reboot in the not too distant future. I would argue that nearly all of the various X-Men films, including the Wolverine film, were essentially one origin story after another. I have lost count of the amount of times I've seen Supermans origin portrayed in various medias. For the love of god, stop establishing characters and tell a damn story with them.

Well there is the reason I'm not generally into sequels. If they told a story instead of picking the part of the oyster that contains explosions then I'd be fine with it. And I didn't mean to imply advocacy of endless reboots just to tell an origin story.

Time moves on and not everyone knows why Superman is super, or why Wolverine has metal claws because even previous films that established those details are getting on a bit, not even considering the relative antiquity of the comics which invented them. A 15-rated action film that's ten year's old now is potentially completely unknown by anyone under the age of 25, and that's a big cinema-going audience slice.

I like origin stories as it gives me a chance to join in the fun from the character's inception, as not historically being a comic reader I often don't know who or why they are. Followers of these characters since inception must be terribly bored, however.

As comics have a much longer time to develop characters, sequel superhero films are often disappointing - often just going for the badass character-that-you-now-know-kicks-all-ass explosion-fest bums-on-seats-at-the-pictures model. Any character development seems to be left out or end up as DVD extras.

As such, I kinda like one-offs like Unbreakable and Hanson, which can tell their story to everyone on an equal footing, but don't need to go anywhere after that.


There is a rather short list of sequels (of any film) I haven't been disappointed by, and that list dramatically diminishes if you exclude sequels based on books that I'd already read and enjoyed. You can probably guess them as they're classic must-see sci-fi in the main.

Crikey, you just answered a question I never asked. I'm not a fan of superhero films at all, but those two I enjoyed.

I meant Hanson. The film about having a crush on a girl band only to find out everyone else knew they were boys. They're making a sequel out of that too, with Brian Molko and Charlene Spiteri.

...That actually sounds rather awesome. That concept of you thinking one thing and everyone else knowing it's different. Are they wrong, are you wrong, are they all lying, are you going crazy? Lots to explore. Starts of with a simple mistake of a 90's band, cascades into a deep look at existentialism.

I can't help but think it looks really silly. Not in the good silly way either, but the just really stupid.

I could be wrong, but I don't think we'll be seeing anything like commentry on massive shadow organisations or the pressures of being one of the very few who stand in the way of destruction ala Neon Genesis Evangelion.
