Yep, that it was. They have cheated a little bit now though. There is a mini map in the top corner.

If it's the same game I'm thinking of I didn't even get as far as the bit seen here. I managed to land the dropship a few times by flying through the squares, then all my guys got eaten by aliens as they ran past me.
