Grolsch is piss. Made in the same metal boxes from the same green chemical goo as coors, carling, caffreys, worthies and stones.

I do of course drink all of them if the need arises (except maybe stones), I'll not stand on principle if it means a pint costs too much.

For drink, we can head in to brum for real ales in pubs? Or buy some at the big tesco?

I do indeed like Grolshahol, but I will drink anything :D I'll probably bring along with me some JD that we all can share ^_^

If you're buying coke, get some delicious RC Cola (aka Sweet Brown's Cold Pop) ^___________^

I find Grolsch to be fucking vile from a can or on tap, but actually not bad at all when in glass bottles, preferably the swing top ones. I can only assume that because the former are in metal barrels and cans it leeches from the containers, unlike the glass bottles which are non reactive (see Coke tasting better from glass bottles).

Could just be a psychological thing? I've tried drinking milk from a mug before and bleh. Obviously it doesn't have time to react differently to being in a mug compared to a glass so it must be in the mind, or perhaps something to do with the mug being cold.

I don't find it Vile but there is a substantial taste difference with drinks from glass instead of can's. The difference in taste between Coke in glass to cans is massive.

Nah, although undoubtedly I think the brain does react differently when glass it put to the mouth rather than metal, I imagine it's something like some of the minerals in metal end up inside the liquid changing the taste.

Having asked myself about a bajillion times why coke from a glass bottle is so awesome compared to a can or a plastic bottle I went and looked it up. Apparently any metal container that the drink is in is rendered as close to inert as possible with a coating, but the coating on the metal is apparently leeching flavour from a beverage stored within as opposed to adding one. Whilst plastic is likely to generate higher levels of certain volatile compounds whilst releasing the gas from the drink.

The big difference with coke apparently is that a lot of glass bottle coke is made with cane sugar not inverted corn syrup. So it tastes less chemical. The can coke tastes less chemical because it's had some chemical removed by its packaging and the plastic bottle coke tastes like bums because it releases the gases and adds horrible things to the drink.

With drink I would also hazard a guess at cans are more likely to contain higher levels of the emulsions of nitrogen that create foam. The craze for widgets is a case in point, bottles didn't need widgets as their natural irregularities allowed for higher bubble nucleation, so the nitrogen releases faster and generates more head (fnar). The uniform surface of inert aluminium allowed for less nucleation, hence the gizmo that inevitably sprayed beer all over the place.

Also - Pint glasses need the little knobbly logo things in the bottom as they're coated to allow for longer shelf life without staining from repeated cleaning, this removes nucleation sites and so beer boffins had to introduce them. This was before they made the foam taps that shitty part-time bar staff use to give you a half pint of froth.

So now you all know too and can answer the question whenever someone brings it up.

Indeed I am bringing some rum. If you could get in some diet coke or coke zero (its the bloody same thing) it'd be muchos appreciated (and remunerated, of course)

I'll try to do a baking again, something less high maintenance than brownies. Does anyone have a preffered muffin flavour? Oh, or allergies. Don't want anyone choking.
EDIT: Mr. J has expressed his desire for something orangey, so I guess i'll make a batch of Orange & poppy seed and a batch of classic chocolate.

Can Mr J remind me when I'm picking him up and Grimmie tell me where his house is? Cheers.

Sure! I'll be at Birmingham international but I'm not sure when my train is supposed to arrive as London Midland is being a bit weird. When I go into my account at their website it doesn't show any planned trips, but the money has been sent so hopefully this won't give me any trouble. It's probably best if I had your phone number as well so I can text you my hour of arrival. Should be somewhere around lunchtime.

What time do you get to London? Is it a single train trip to Brum International?

I believe so, yes. The train I was supposed to take is normally at 10.46, and I had to collect my tickets at a St. Euston vending machine using the credit card I used to buy them.

This is a good website - http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

If you're coming from on the 10:46 from London Euston [EUS] (Platform 17) then you arrive in Brum town for 13:01.

Oh wow, that site is offering me the same ticket for 6 quid. I paid 20 quid for mine and without a guarantee that I'll be able to collect it at St. Euston. Thanks for the site Tezz.

Yes, I'm picking up Mr J from Birmingham International not Birmingham New Street. If you can get there around the same time he does, I'll gladly transport you. Sometime between 12 and 1 on Friday.
