Solid State Hard Drives

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Solid State Hard Drives

Post by TezzRexx »

Has anyone got one or have any experience with them?

Are they worthwhile for Windows/Games/Video editing?

I've been meaning to list these excellent series of articles up in yonder compilation thread. Will do that shortly later sometime.

Standard hard drives are pretty fast these days, and still mostly better at sequential read/write. Where SSDs shine is random read, which is great for snappy opening of programs and what not. For games they really only affect loading times, so if you're patient then probably not a huge deal. I don't know enough about video editing but same principles. If you're constantly needing to grab lots of little bits of data then they'll be good, if you just load in huge files to memory then not so much.

I've been resisting getting a 120gb SSD for a while now, probably a good job I havn't bought one yet as the prices seem to have dropped quite a lot recently.

I'd only use it for a boot drive so reckon 120gb would be enough, althugh some 240gb ones are now at the same price as when I started looking at getting a 120gb...

Hmm, I'll try hold out a bit longer!.

I bought a crucial M4 240gigish a while back, when I was fed up of slow windows 7.
Windows is a bit quicker, and in general yeah its noticeably quicker to boot. Average usage though im not so sure, jury is still out. And I keep most data & games (not CSS!) on a samsung F3 just because they take up space and i dont use them much.

tl;dr: meh

Don't buy an SSD instead of other upgrades. It's only really worthwhile if you're already using a great CPU/GPU/RAM/etc.

Thanks for halp guise.

What constitute great specs (I'm at little bit out of the loop) - I have 4GB ram DDR3 RAM, Geforce 560 Ti and a 2.66hz Core Duo E6750 (which, I imagine lets the rest of it down) so I'm unsure as whether it would really benefit.

The main reason is that I am running out of space, but was considering lumping all my games and Windows onto a SSD and have all my pr0ns etc on my SATA.

But if the benefits are negligible, I may just get another standard SATA.

Yeah you're better off with a new CPU & mobo than buying an SSD. The other problem is that good SSDs are still over $1/GB, so you'll spend a huge amount for enough space to store games on. I have a 60GB one and right now it's basically full with just Windows and my regular applications. If you do get one, I suggest no less than 120GB. Still, for the money you'll spend on a 120GB SSD, you can buy a great 1.5TB or 2TB drive.

Should be alright, it's from their latest line of 7200 RPM drives.
