Spec me a possible new graphics card, bitches!

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Not to worry, it lived long enough for Mrs Lat to sort out all her job hunting stuff, so was still much appreciated.

You could always plump for one of the cheaper Radeons Lat, there's some half decent ones around £50.

[Insert Grimmie thread resurrect pictcha]

GeForce GTX 285 is now pretty ancient, though my 2.6Ghz Quad Core machine is still fine so I figured it's time for a gfx card upgrade (also, ArmA3 and other stuff inbound soon). Is now a good time to buy and what's the going concern? Budget not really a major issue, though a tried and tested card would be nice as opposed to the spankiest just off the production line expensive mark up one.

GTX 560ti is still a great price/performance buy, but AMD just launched their 79xx, 78xx, and 77xx series GPUs and Nvidia are poised to announce the GTX 6xx series GPUs. I'd say right now a 7870 (when they're actually available) would have you set for a good while (faster than a GTX 570 with less noise & power draw). If you can, I'd wait a couple weeks or so.

Coolio. Yeah no rush at all, everything's still running fine but just fancy an upgrade sometime soon.

This seems quite cool and up to date.

I've been pretty happy with my GTX560 so far, it's a non-Ti as my budget was quite tight, but the price between them is pretty small now. I have the Q6600 2.4GHz quad "processor that will never die" and can run all the Skyrims even with the face sliders fully to the max. It wasn't a massive leap from my GTX280OC, though, but that was broken so I had to grab something quickly.

The '448 edition' GTX560Ti is just about to come out, with 448 stream processors instead of the 384/336 in the 560Ti/560. They are about the same price as the highest-spec 560Ti, with less memory and slower clock speeds - extra memory only really matters at super-high res and the clock speed should be compensated by it being able to do more simultaneously within each clock cycle. At half the price of GTX580s, but with only 12.5% less stream processors, they look quite attractive.

Oooh, as I'm in the market for a new graphics card, that's rather helpful.

I have a 2.67Ghz Core i7. It's got a GTX285 in it, which is pissing me off cos it keeps breaking. Is there any reason why I shouldn't rage buy a GTX680?

Because that's in inordinate amount to spend? :P A £600 card won't last 3x longer than a £200 card. 660 range shouldn't too far away, which should give the best bang:buck.

With respect, "xx Gfx card shouldn't too far away, which should give the best bang:buck" is the common litany every time you ask about a gfx card. I'd like to buy one now, so do I go for a 670, 680, or what?

Well, I mean it. It's not like waiting for Nvidia to move from one generation to the next, they're in the process of rolling out the 6xx range, which started at 690 and is filtering down. But yes, it'll be a few weeks. So...

If you bought a basic 670 it would max any game currently on sale, only dropping below 60fps on something really intense*. 680 is a big price increase for not much of a performance increase.

*Assuming 1920x1080.

I'm personally with Thompy, you could get a lesser card for around £200 and probably wouldn't know the difference. If you would like to wait, that's probably best but otherwise it's your money, waste it if you wish :P

Ta for the advice - 680 is slightly taking the piss, but I'm angry enough at my shitty 285 screwing up my game tonight that I needed some retail therapy stat. So gone ahead and got a 670 job for some monies. The joys of having no wife and no life: I get to waste my monies how I like ;)

GTX 670 will serve you very well, for a couple years probably. Excellent choice.

If you really want it. I got fed up with it cos the GPU crashes constantly - apparently it's a common problem judging by the 1000+ thread on the nvidia forums, but they deny it has anything to do with the card.
