Berk made me play Trains again (OTTD v1.2 released a couple of weeks ago). I blame him entirely. Wasn't my idea, honest! But it's really rather good still. We had a good run on vanilla as a warm up, but decided it was too easy so slapped a load of mods on it which rather change the game completely. Industry is much more complicated, with several tiers and multiple resources required to make them efficient. Nor can you just offload all the coal in the world to one power station as they have a finite capacity. Towns now require several resources to grow such as goods, fuel and food as well as regular passenger and mail deliveries.
And the trains...there are hun'eds of 'em. But running costs are much higher, plus you have to pay maint on your infrastructure, so you can longer just spam huge networks and simply think of novel ways to spend your millions. It all requires much more careful planning and a clear strategy, otherwise the inefficient industries will simply close down on you.
It's completely free in every way. The source code was released yonks ago and it's been in fan update mode ever since. You will, however, pay with your life. Let this be a warning. If you enjoyed Simcity, have any OCD tendencies, think Dorf Fortress is great and play Minecrack solo in build mode, then you will probably be dead within a week after picking up OTTD.

Wifeyberk cleans quite successfully tyvm. But Berk is a walking shitstorm. He needs to adopt a cleaning lady to walk round after him. My house was spotless until Berk moved in. I spose at least you getting him back into OTTD is keeping him out of the kitchen and stops him making more mess
Managed to snag a coal subsidy and paid of a good chunk of the loan, which has taken us from barely breaking even to finally making a profit after 35 years. This mod is hard!
Well I had paid of a chunk of loan. Then Berk joined and made some monstrosity of a station, and we're back to where we started! It better start paying out soon or I'll be selling your trains to feed the family!
