Last night I thought I'd accidentally skipped to the end (I'll be vague). Having been doing whatever took my fancy I'd kind of forgotten which one was the main quest. It turns out it was the ones for the woman who has a hidey hole in an inn back room, and once I did a few things happened rather quickly (because I'd already done a bunch of stuff) and I thought I was facing a premature Game End Scenario.

It went kind of like this:
I was supposed to go "incognito" to a party, but nearly everyone there already knew me.
HideyHoleWoman:"find this dude"
Me:"Oh, him - he's been hiding in my cellar, wondered who he was"
Dude:"go to top of mountin, meet boss of greybeards"
Me:"I can't get past barrier will you help?"
Greybeards:"no"
Greybeards:"oh, okay then"
Boss:"hi"
Me:"werd"
Boss:"You will need to find this ancient and powerful artif.."
Me:"What, this old thing? I found it in a bin"
Boss:"Soon you must fight the Big Baddie who I have waited for for centuries...Oh, here he is right now"

Luckily though - it wasn't the end, either of the game or even the main quest, hurrah - back to finding lost items for careless townsfolk.

Actually, that's a good point: without giving away spoilers, is this a game that is safe to do the main quest first, or is it afflicted with a Fallout like "main quest is over, you must stop playing now!" thing. I've been kind of avoiding the main quest just in case, but if its ok to do I would like to finish it off then go back to side quests.

As I understand it once the main quest is completed you're free to carry on with every else, with little or no effect on the world. I've avoided the main quest by completely forgetting what I was supposed to be doing. I caught up yesterday but can't go further without more shouts it seems. Oh well, back to wandering.

Yep, I finished it and it didn't really seem to change much. Some recommendations I would make when you play the game are to hold off on the civil war quest until you finished the main quest, and if you want a challenge with your final boss don't wait too long, because I did (level 40+) and he was a piece of piss, a total let-down.
One final thing I would recommend is to hold off joining factions until you finish the 'Blood on the ice' quest (about the serial killer) in Windhelm. Apparently if you join a faction (though it's probably the dark brotherhood quest, but don't join anything if you want to be safe) the quest won't trigger and you are unable to buy the Windhelm house (which is awesome and better/cheaper than the Solitude one). It happened to me and since Bethesda hasn't fixed it yet it's pretty damn frustrating as I have a shitload of money just waiting to be spend on that house, but I can't.

Sell it, I have no use for armour. All my crap goes in my little room at the mage college. Being nearly an arch-mage I really should get my own place, for keeping up appearances.
