Xfire

Post by Dr. kitteny berk »

As has been noted elsewhere, xfire has gone to shit recently and is often more trouble than it's worth, additionally, steam is ubiquitous these days.

Anyway, I'm wondering if it's worth 5punk abandoning xfire for steam.

Thoughts?

I haven't had many problems with it lately, but I do turn off most in-game notifications. Not all my games are Steam and I like the way it records the hours, but it's probably more a suggestion for new members than a prerequisite now.

I run both and prefer XFire's chat windows, but certainly have no aversion to using Steam.

The only times I turn it on are when playing games with 5punkers on Fri or Sat, and being honest I can't think of the last time I used it to actually join a game that wasn't on Steam anyway, apart from COD4 when we were playing it semi regularly.

I'm not sure i have xfire installed anymore? I remember it conflited with something. Anyway, havent used it for ages.

Steam friends works very nicely i recon. Even if your games arent in it, you tend to be signed in anyway, and you can easily add non-steam games to it. Even if it isnt quite as good at auto-joining online games, its not bad and I think ease of use & being universally installed on gamers PCs makes it my preference.

I don't have anything against xfire as such, but i expect it will fade away eventually. I certainly havent missed it, but I dont see it doing any harm if some people want to stick with it? (Just also use steam :P )

I leave it on but I haven't really used it is ages. Steam does everything that Xfire does worthwhile. I'm not bothered if we stop using it entirely.

Oh, I use it for MSN, some people I know only have that. My router has some unfixable glitch that makes it shut down and have to be hard-reset if I run Messenger or any other MSN-capable chat program besides XFire. I guess I could get a new router now I no longer need the current one's dual-WAN capability, but I kinda like its other fancy features.

The screenshotting, video recording and broadcasting were quite fun, and the downloaded of patches quite useful, but I have other things that do all of them a lot better (ie: actually work in-game). I do like the chat logs, and can sometimes be found revisiting my own and other 5punker's drunken ramblings.

I haven't had XFire installed since I reformatted my computer several months ago, and I only just realised... whoops. Steam sounds good to me, isn't there a 5punkers group or something? Can I get an invite? The username is eRabbit (probably).

I won't be sad to stop using Xfire and to see the back of the evidence of my hundreds of hours of playing WoW. It's hidden evidence but I know it's still there.

Yes, there's a 5punkers group, however I can't find you on there (to add as a friend) to then invite you to the group.
You sure eRabbit is your logon name?

I've been thinking about the ditching of xfire for a bit recently, as apart from logging your gaming hours it's pretty much been eclipsed by Steam. Problem is, I much prefer xfire's interface. I'd have to have a three-foot high monitor to see my whole Steam friends list plus 5punky group. Anyone know of a way to unbiggen it?

If you click the little down pointing arrow at the top of the friends list window (the very top), you get a menu where you can untick "show avatars". It shrinks it quite a bit. That might help if you've not done it already.

The only thing I like about Xfire over Steam is that you can have in game chat in most games. Don't think Steam can do that unless you're playing a game provided by Steam. If It could nail that down, I'd probably drop it.

Plus, I like to stare at my hours to inflate my e-penis every now and again :}

You can add games to your Steam list to use chat and show up to friends.

This. Although Steam does that too, just not as well.

Steam is hilariously bad at it. Unless I really did complete portal 2 in four hours.
