Out of interest, has anyone ever used a Dvorak keyboard/layout? I believe that they are much easier to type with. I know the QWERTY layout was originally designed to stop typewriter keythings jamming, but obviously that's not an issue these days. Would be interesting to see if switching to Dvorak improved for everyone (once the old muscle memory was unlearned).

Edit: the reason I ask is that the Finnish use some sort of modified Dvorak, which probably makes it easier for them to type.

Yes, I gave it a go for a few months. The science behind it is very sound, and if we all re-learnt how to type, it would be far better. But as always, its not that simple. It took me years to learn to touchtype properly, and re-learning that all over again - I didn't have the patience. Plus when out and about, on office (or when I tried it, uni) computers or laptops, any other place you have to use a keyboard of course they are qwerty, and using them undoes any attempt to relearn the movements.
All in all, I reckon if you stick at it for a year or two, you'd come out maybe half as fast again as you are now on a normal keyboard. I for one though, didn't have the patience to type at half speed for two years. And be prepared to carry your keyboard with you. It doesn't seem possible to use two types efficiently at the same time.

I switch between AZERTY (standard for Belgium) and QWERTY (my keyboard is American) all the time, and it always takes a day or so to get used to them. Luckily there are spellcheckers to remind me I've typed an a instead of a q. The difference between the above keyboards is marginal though, and I never learned how to touch type (assuming this is the same as what we call 'blind typing') properly so I can't really speak of experience.
