Grimmington Mansion

Post by Grimmie »

Hey, so I just put a deposit down on a swanky little flat in the centre of Birmingham, and I wondered if you guys could give me some figures for your monthly outgoings, so I can try and figure out how much I'm going to have left-over each month.

I have the definite costs down, such as mobile phone usage, food, contents insurance, tv licence etc.
What would be handy is if I could get a pool of figures for average water, gas, electricity etc. What do you pay each month?

Virgin DSL look like my best bet (after scanning Sky and Talktalk for their average monthly charges), but open to suggestion there too.

Cheers!

Fuck knows, all I know is that the bills eat what's left of my wages after rent every month. I think I pay a bit less than FJ for utilities (I only have electricity, no gas) and TV etc through Virgin (I only have the most basic packages, comes to about £40). Add about £100 onto FJ's bill for my council tax. You should be able to find out about yours from the council though, Surrey Heath were very helpful with me. Roman might have a pretty accurate set of figures for you, I think he lives in a similar sort of thing.

Leccy I seem to paying about £30/mo (scottish power) though, this is after a few way too spendy providers (southern electric and EDF), and some economy on my part (only use my boiler at night unless I run out of water, don't use tumble drier/washing machine in the day, computer off whenever I sleep) I'd expect more like £45/mo during the winter for me.

Water, no idea
No gas.
Internets/phone £20 (virgin)
Council tax £12 (yay being a spaz)

Whatever monthly figure you get to, add another couple of hundred quid on top. I had my monthly outgoings planned when I first moved in, but there will always be something you forget to account for. When I get around to opening my post I'll update on bills etc.

When figuring out bills, remember two things:

Gas and Electric are usually billed every 3 months, even if you set up a monthly debit, you won't know if you have over or underpaid until they come through. Also, pay more for them in the summer months so that you are well in credit when winter rolls around. See if you can get a combo deal.

Council tax is usually counted over 10 months, and you get 2 months off before the tax year rolls around again.

While we're on the subject, my insurance ran out last week.

Any suggestions?

Also, need bike insurance for something spendy (probably £2k to replace it with something equal)

I've always used Endsleigh for contents insurance, I'm sure they'll quote for additonal high value items.
