I honestly think he cultivates the gaffes on purpose just so he can see people's reactions and laugh at them. He's been doing it for so long now that it's expected and people just kind of see him as a harmless but slightly racist grandfather figure.

The man has the wonderfully supercilious sense of humour that only someone who was around at the height of the British Empire can perpetuate. Everyone else is just jealous has the balls to say what we're all thinking.
