Is the Desire HD the same as the HD7 but with Android instead of Win7? If so, I'd recommend that. The battery life is about 3 days for me at a push, but it's all USB so you can just plug it into your computer to recharge it.

There's a trickle of new apps appearing, but the OS is still pretty basic. Nice and smooth, easy to navigate, but missing basic things like being able to use MP3s as ringtones, setting custom wallpapers, copy/paste. The biggest disappointment I've found is that in order to get a PDF onto the phone you need to download it - there's no file transfer.

I think they're just teething problems, but it could really benefit from being a drag and drop extension to desktop Win 7. If they try to lock it down they're competing directly with iOS and I don't think they'll win.

I think you can thank the Chinese goverment in part for that. One of the benefits of having their political system is that they simply decreed that all phones sold there must use universal chargers.

That's not too bad honestly. My Nokia barely does a day of medium usage.

The latest sense ui on the htc's are great, it adds a lot to the android os and is very flexible, something I hate about my old win 6.5 phone is the lack of home screen customisation.

Those are the things that draws me away from the iPhone and to the Desire although if you jailbait it, I'm sure you can do some very fancy UI and home screen changes.

Also, why would you dump 3? A lot of people say they're shit but I never find out the reason. Although, I can vouch first hand that their upgrade offers are shite.

Never used them myself but so many people I know have been in protracted battles with them about trying to leave, bills being sent to people fot hundreds/thousands and then 3 adamantly refusing to budge on obvious errorz, bailiffs turning up for final bills of about ten quid, a few days after the final bill has been issued.

Granted you only really pick up and remember the terrible stories but I've heard so many more about 3 than any other.

I thinking step one is get a hold of the full t&c's for your contract and seeing what wriggle room there is for cancelling.

It's your dads business one iirc. If you haven't signed anything and if you want to really drop it like a warm turd then cancel the DD, give the phone/sim back to your dad and let him deal with the follow up.

Of course you would then have angry family to deal with, but the chance to get your own contract.

Would you have any ground to stand on by saying that the letter was lost in the post?

Obviously I don't know your T+C's but I assumed the default is that that once you're initial contract runs out, you're put on a 1 month rolling contract that you can cancel any time.

What's the risk by just cancelling the DD? A slight mark against your credit ranting?

I'm due an upgrade, woooo. But as decent phones now tie you into 18/24 month contracts I need something with longevity, well as much as can be expected taking into account how fast technology moves these days. Which means to say it should prob be something close to its release date, the problem that creates a gamble as your buying something that hasn't been put to the public test. Nobody wants to buy a flop like I kinda did with my last one. (Nokia N97)
I thought about iPhone 4 but thats old now surely iPhone 5 is out soon?? Any rumors on this. Not thinking really too much about iOS as it's linear and Apple, never really been a fan.
I really like the idea of android/wp7, not much between these right?
Definately jumping off the symbian sinking ship.

I saw Samsung Galaxy S II Which seems seriously awesome. Anyone got one or know a friend with one? Thoughts?

I was just looking at this last night as I'm due an upgrade in a month, and am sorely tempted to see if I can wangle a HTC Sensation. However, if I can't get it for free on a contract costing £30/month or less, I'm going to get a Desire S instead.

Nooo, not right. I've got the HD7 with Win 7 on it. It's quite restrictive and not very well supported. Not that I dislike it - it's also nice and smooth, and integrates well with Hotmail, X-box live, and anything else Windows Live related. It needs to mature more before it's a real contender though. You could get one now and hope they sort it - they've got everyone who works for Microsoft testing them at the moment - but it's a gamble as you say.

Yeah I saw the Sensation too but I liked the Samsung extras to the gingerbread interface, and the more RAM/Storage and the cheeky gimmics. SuperAMOLED Plus? Yes please! The reviews didn't reveal any major short comings so I was looking for some first hand experience. Or any other alternatives that better it.

Can android phones update to new versions, or are you stuck with the version you bought the phone with. Or restricted by the operator/company, I know I couldn't update my nokia to the latest nokia version because Three wouldn't allow it.

It depends on the phone but usually high end phones like the Galaxy S II get one or two major updates before they stop supporting it. Google have just announced a new plan to guarantee updates for 18 months after a phone is released which may or may not apply to the Galaxy S II.

The Galaxy S II is easily the best android phone available at the moment, probably even the best phone regardless of OS. Closest competitor is the HTC Sensation but I'm not a fan of sense ui.
