Shadowrun publisher in trouble

For games played by men (and women) with beards, such as tabletop RPGs.

Shadowrun publisher in trouble

Post by Joose »

Somewhat ironic, considering what the game is about, but apparently Catalyst Games Labs (the people who make Shadowrun and Eclipse Phase) have misplaced $850k. Whoops!

Official Statement on whats happened

Of course, the semi-official forums Dumpshock have exploded with much wailing and tearing of clothes. A panicy minority seem to think the this is The End, some are already talking about which company should buy the licence (please god, if this happens, dont let it be WotC), and some are pointing at the fact that this isnt the first time something like this has happened to SR, and its still going. Indeed, there are other RPG companies that have had it worse, and are still going. Im inclined to agree with the latter group, but as there are a lot of odd rumours and conflicting information going around, im going to wait and see before I come to any conclusions.

I'll be keeping an eye on whats happening, and keep you all informed.
I dont think, whatever happens, that it will affect us much. SR4 is well established now, so even if the absolute worst happens, CGL fold and no-one buys the licence, we would still have plenty to keep us going indefinately. Dont forget, SLA hasnt had anything new in years, we still play that just fine.

Games companies fold, merge, and rise all the time. Tabletop games don't need support like videogames do, so a small fanbase can keep a game alive for years only for another company on the up to absorb them and resurrect them. SLA is a good example, although that is still very inactive despite Cubicle 7 having the license for a good while now.

Exactly. And like someone on dumpshock pointed out, the fact that there was all that money around to be thieved shows that SR is a good and healthy licence, so even if CGL does go down, someone will pick it up.

Haha, the official line, from an actual person within the company who would be in a position to influence such things, when asked about the possibility of SR going to Wizards: "No it fucking isnt." Good good!

Sell it to a mate for a tenner and let him sit in his garage with a printer until it's sorted, just not wizards
