Batman: Arkham Asylum - Xbox 360 [Spunky mini-review]

Post by cheeseandham »

The rebooted Batman trapped in Arkham Asylum with the Joker pulling the strings while you move around the island.

A third bat-person stealth, collecting, puzzle elements and beat-em up game.

4/5 - Nicely put together, worthy of the Batman name, worth a play if you get the chance.

Sorry to piss on your hammy cheesy chips with this, but wouldn't it be better to ask scores for the pc version? I'm fairly sure a lot more of us have played that one.

Also, the problem with this is that I haven't played it, but I can't see the score without voting, which seems to undermine the idea a little. Good starting point though!

Pete, I see no piss, so I'm going to eat my hammy cheesy chips anyway :)

This was just a test of Dogpant's review idea. Alas I do not play PC games so I could only honestly review the Xbox 360 version.

If the PC version wishes to be rated, it can start it's own thread :) Seriously though, I don't think it'll hurt the board to have both.

Given the relative similarities for most games now could we not combine them and use the comments part to separate PC from console versions?

A combined rating would be more useful as it's likely to get more votes/scores. Assuming the game across platforms is not significantly different. Batman AA only has some graphical differences on the PC I believe, unless you're foolish enough to use the mouse and keyboard for control and then complain about it.

Something like Dragon Age might be trickier.

/edit
5/5 - An excellent exploration beat-em-up. Why can't all games be this polished?

I didn't want this game especially, I'm not a massive fan of button-bashing fighty games and if I do buy one it's on the consoles. It came as part of the Eidos super pack and I haven't played it.

I do wonder though, whether it's a failing if it doesn't play so well with standard PC controls, or if that's what you expect from a fighting game - much as you might a driving game.

Is it a shoddy port, or an overambitious one? Is it right to assume PC gamers have gamepads? Bioware's games genrally translate well in both directions - they make efforts to use the platforms strengths, but even they couldn't make Jade Empire anything other than a bit clumsy with a keyboard.

Only just starting playing this, and so far I'm really impressed. As mentioned, it is very polished. Good story telling and gameplay so far, although the fights suffer from looking awesome no matter what you do (that might sound like a strange criticism, but it's basically akin to button mashing but getting beautiful flowing combat out it. Yeah, that still sounds poor).

Only quibble with it so far is the graphics. To be honest, they're bloody lovely. Problem is you spend half your time walking around in 'Detective Mode' which sends everything a bit fuzzy. Obviously the gameplay department had a falling out with the art department - "the levels may be sumptuous, but no one will ever see them! Ahahahahaha!". Etc.
