Fantasy Board Games

Does anyone else play them?

There's been a lot of talk about Blood Bowl but I'm assuming that's not being played on a real board around here.

I have done in the past, but since I left home I've never had antone to play them with. Depending on your definition of board game I've played Heroquest, Advanced Heroquest, Space Crusade, Space Hulk, Blood Bowl, Necromunda, Talisman, Dark Future, Battletech, and about half a dozen wargames (WH, WH40k, Space Marine, Warzone, WW2 armour). I'd still enjoy playing them (especially Necromunda), but online gaming is so much easier I've little incentive to find a gaming partner nearby.

EDIT: The PC version of Blood Bowl is exactly the same as the current version of the board game (in classic mode at least), just on a computer.

Indeed. I wish they would do this with more GW games. A version of 40k or Necromunda done in the same style would be awesome.

Not Fantasy but Rail Baron was the last board game i've played. They made it into a PC version.

I wish I could play Talisman again as I only played it 3 times and I thought it was pretty awesome.

Titan was cool and I just found it ONLINE.

But to answer your question, no, only electric versions...

I'm defining fantasy board games as those usually with a board, encapsulated within a single box and with a rigid set of rules. I don't know much about table-top RPGs like the Warhammers but they seem too involved to me.

You've reminded me of a couple of games I'd forgotten about about and mentioned some of interest, I'll look them up.

BTW there's some interesting looking Cthulhu based games. Arkham Horror is one I've looked into.

This is why I bought it up. The recent TV programme Games Britannia (quite interesting) made me think about the board games I used to play with my two brothers as kids. Talisman being the one that we remember as the best of the few we played. Partly due to it being quite easy to play. Although I don't know whether we managed to finish a game due to cheating and arguing.

Anyway I investigated and there's a really nice revised 4th edition of Talisman that was released last year. I bought that and soon after a couple of the expansions. There's one more expansion but I don't have the table space. It's quite easy to play and a lot more fun than traditional board games, due to the character and narrative elements. Me and my brothers have played about 10 games in the past couple of weeks. It makes a nice change from the distance of playing with people online, that's the main appeal for me.

So what I was after was game suggestions/recommendations and possibly interested nearby players.

Well technically Warhammer is a wargame, not an RPG, but either way it's not applicable. All the other ones are though - they fit in a single box and don't require you to go out and buy anything else. I can't really say I've played much outside the Games Workshop stuff, although I did see a zombie game out there once that looked interesting.

Good lord I'd forgotten about Talisman. We had it when I was younger, but no one else could ever be arsed to play it (except my older brother who couldn't stand losing so cheated like a bastard).

If you mean Zombies!!! then I can confirm its quite ace. Its a bit like L4D in board form.

Not really fantasy boardgames, but ive been playing a lot of Settlers of Catan and Carcasson recently. They are pretty good: simple enough to learn quickly but fairly deep strategy.

i played a game called the settlers of catan a while back and rather enjoyed that, i was very drunk at the time and dont remember much about it though

Board gaems!

Ty and I stopped for a look through a shop window in brum last bash that seemed to stock every old board game ever. It was a nice respite from the trek grimmie led us on.

Also, does this not qualify for beard forum?

Settlers of Catan seems to be a very popular board game, from what I've seen in my travels through the world of board games.

There's another zombie game that looks very good: Last Night on Earth. And also a free little game you can print off: Zombie In My Pocket. It's quite fun, but I recommend that if you're using an inkjet printer you use thick paper or thin card. Otherwise you can see through the backs of the pieces. You can print it off in black and white without effecting the gameplay.

Catan's the best board game ever really. There's a pretty decent online multiplayer version of it actually here, although it's called "Xplorers".

Moved, due to popular demand.

My intention for the thread was board games of the more beardy nature anyway. Just not full blown beard with lembas bread crumbs and a d20 dice in it.

That did occur to me as I typed. It was for the benefit of those that don't know what "d20" means.
