5punker of the Year 2009
Is it really that time already? How the year's flown. It seems to have been a quiet year, with relatively few games of note released, especially multiplayer. However, membership is slightly up, we have burgeoning beards, and a fresh year brings fresh ideas.
So before we start our nominations, lets decide on the categories. From last year we have:
5punker of the Year
Talented Bastard
Liver of the Year
Keyboard Monkey
Nazi of the Year
Pimp of the Year
Dirty Spammer of the Year
Vampire of the Year
I'd like to propose we lose Keyboard (maybe just give Ty a lifetime achievement award), Nazi (don't really want to encourage it, and it's been lax this year anyway), and Vampire (not really anough games to cause people to shun the light this year).
By way of replacements I'd like to see awards for games. I know last year there was some discussion of the exact semantics of it, so we could break it down into several awards:
New SP Game of the Year - The most popular/voted best single player game released since Jan 09
New MP Game of the Year - The most popular/voted best multiplayer game released since Jan 09
5punky Game of the Year - The game most played this year in a 5punky way
Time Vacuum - The game which has contributed the most hours on xfire at the time of the award
Also, I don't know how feasible this is within PHPBB, but would it be possible to have achievements in our profiles? Little badgers we can win by spamming, winning awards, going beyond the call of 5punky duty in games, and other such stuff? Assuming it can be done, would people like that?

I'd say WoW for 5punky game of the year. It's picked up quite a following amongst us recently, and we still manage to play it with a true 5punky ethos and not "srs bsnss".
MP of the year - erm, I admit I'm out of ideas for this. Can we vote for CoD4 again?
SP of the year - honestly can't think of anything spectacular I've played this year. I'll vote for Dragon Age - not played it but it looks good.
Time Vacuum - probably WoW again.

What happened to meat shield of the year? I worked really hard to not get it this year!
In all fairness though, I can take the abuse but I can see how others would not be happy with title of 'worst gamer of the entire community', it's as if we're deliberately trying to alienate people. And yes, I'd also drop Nazi and keyboard monkey, but keep Vampire.
EDIT: I really like the achievement idea, should keep things interesting and fresh. That or everyone will spam the board with meaningless posts.

I wonder if I was looking at the wrong year's awards. I actually quite like Meat Shield. Lets face it, we're hardly OMG 1337 and I think it's quite an accolade for a 5punker.

Well people deliberately spamming might just find their post count going down instead of upMr. Johnson wrote:EDIT: I really like the achievement idea, should keep things interesting and fresh. That or everyone will spam the board with meaningless posts.

Re: 5punker of the Year 2009
Well we could actually have:Dog Pants wrote:Also, I don't know how feasible this is within PHPBB, but would it be possible to have achievements in our profiles? - Post count achievements: 2500/5000/10000/15000/Beat Berk
- Morning thread count achievements: first discoboard thread every day containing the word "morning"
- Comedian achievements: have a discoboard post with 5/10/.. direct replies containing only ""
- ZP embed race achievements: first discoboard post containing a ZP embed every wednesday
- Awardmong achievements: achieving 2/3/5/all 5punk yearly awards in one year, awarded manually
- Gaming time achievements: something like 160 hours spent gaming on any given 2 week period or 10 hours spent playing some game a week or 8000 total hours on eve, could be pulled from xfire
- Forum watch achievements: way too long time spent on the forums on a day
- Donor achievement: donate x 5perm to y different people in total
- The Hans N. Langseth achievement: very very very long post in any sticky beard thread
We could also link up steam achievements using this site, all you'd have to do is enter your steam community page ID, then we could have achievementmong achievements, for collecting x achievements or x "points".

Good call, I like the steam thing. Shame so few games have achievements. Still, I'm glad I can show off my Little Rocket Man.Baliame wrote:Well we could actually have:Dog Pants wrote:Also, I don't know how feasible this is within PHPBB, but would it be possible to have achievements in our profiles? I was thinking something less transient than 'be the one who does x this week'. Stuff that could be pulled from the database could be automated I imagine, but we don't want to create a huge admin burden by having to mess about with them every week. Possibly make it recipient driven - have a thread where you can apply for an achievement and an admin can unlock it once verified.
Re: 5punker of the Year 2009
There doesn't seem to be a way to link to a player's ID (player id = 'stoat' : url = 5j2m3), so you might have to make do with a link to your Steam Community page. It may well be a simple obfuscation we can undo, but the fact it's there suggests they don't want people harvesting their results.Dog Pants wrote:Good call, I like the steam thing. Most of us are English, asking for achievements isn't going to workDog Pants wrote:I was thinking something less transient than 'be the one who does x this week'. A mixture of automated achievements (eg n posts) and mod-given rewards for things we'd like to encourage/deserve recognition seems like a good balance.
