I play Fifa 09 quite a bit, I used to be a big fan of PES but I, like many, think that Fifa and PES switched roles.

I'm told in the last few years FIFA upped its game while PES made some unpopular control/AI decisions.
Certainly if you've avoided FIFA before (and you've had every reason to do so) it's now worth looking at again.

I often found Fifa games to be far too arcade-y but 09 provides more realism and makes use of the physics in terms of tackling, passing and shooting.

PES also made a few technical fuck ups, with one of the games' frame rates apparently being so terrible that it rendered it unplayable.
I really enjoyed PES 6 (I believe it was 6) and in many ways, Fifa plays like that.

I think Sensible Soccer represented the zenith of the genre.

I played FIFA until about '95 but gave up when my 'kick the ball diagonally from the corner of the 18 yard box' tactic stopped working and I concentrated on Football Management instead.

Also, http://fantasy.premierleague.com/ is starting this weekend if anyone wants to try and relive last year's success/failures.

I'd give 2010 a looksee but online lag I wouldn't tolerate, as I play 99.9 of my fifa matches online.

Fifa seems to get much better user reviews on Play, especially for the online bits. You got PS3 Tezz?

I'm pretty sure a 360 version will be indistinguishable from a PS3 one, it's just unfortunate that choosing one will only give you a subset of 5punkers to play with. The 360's social features are slightly ahead in my view, but the PS3 gets more software updates.

I've never understood the dogged determination of FIFA/Evo devotees that their particular version is better of what looks like the same game to me. I mean surely the other one would still be fun, right? Some seem to treat it like some eternal vs. war and only their chosen game has the right to exist in creation.

Sensible Soccer was a top-down affair with teeny tiny players and ball. It was simple and fun, all the 3D stuff, the shitty failure of Actua Soccer and the special-move-combo-aftertouch put me off more modern iterations - you can't just pick it up and play it with a complete neophyte like you could Sensi.

I guess if you're that into it you notice the differences that I wouldn't, even between each year's new release.

Thinking about it I have played more recently than 1995, I had FIFA '97 on the Sega Saturn and FIFA 2006 on the original XBox and have also played Evo on other peoples PS2s and at least a couple of the demos on the current consoles. I got on with them all okay, and haven't really detected much fundumental change - the graphics got better of course, but were of the time so didn't seem notable.

With the management games I've been fairly fickle - switching between Championship Manager and Football Manager at will with a bit of LMA Manager on the old consoles. Apart from a few aberrations, such as the first (new) Football Manager (2005) and a horrifically buggy Championship Manager in 2007 I've been happy to pick just one and play it all year. While the geek in me notices the differences, I find both equally playable and enjoyable.

I have Fifa 09 for t'Xbox, and will be getting Fifa 10 when it's out too. If I have the monies for Live Gold or whatever it is you need for online play, then I'd be up for playing against 5punkers.

PEs has let me down the last 3 years so I think I'll be trying Fifa this year.
