If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

I bet you'll never use it. If you're on Fista and everything works fine then it'll work fine on 7 as well. 7 is supposed to be even more compatible than Fista anyway.

:above: this.

Also you can of course just install virtual PC and make an xp VM yourself, possibly not quite as fast (unlikely to be as polished etc) but will work without a problem.

Aye, I suppose. I just hate how many versions they're bringing out and don't really see why a few extra features cost nearly £100 more than the standard version.

Silly question, but what is the best way to transfer things from old hard drive to new? I really don't want to have to reinstall everything.

I usually just copy my stuff over and see what works. Some does, some doesn't, some just needs a bit of fiddling.

I've always assumed a re-install was required due to registry entries. But I guess some apps and games don't use the registry, at least not for anything too significant.

However if you don't know how to move files around (or don't have the resources to do it) it's irrelevant.

The XP "mode" is just MS Virtual PC, which you can get free anyway - the only difference with Pro is that you get a free ready-made installation of XP to open in it.
