Champions online beta

Well, are you on it?

Mostly I'm interested to know if it's worth the occasional scheduled game to test for 5punkiness.

I are. It has nice CoX bits, but mostly it's not that much cop. The combat is fatally flawed. Although, if it's a 5punkyness test it might be worth another shot.

I've heard they've been fucking with the combat to some degree pretty much every patch so far.

I imagine it's one that's going to need to mature before it's a good game.

But then, CoX, for all its limitations had some of the best gaming ever committed by 5punk.

Yarp

Although I've not been playing it much lately as I want to wait for the final release. I'm getting a bit bored of testing unfinished games and it should be released in less than a month.

Mostly this. Unless something significant has changed recently, im not sure what everyone is on about with the combat. Other than your ability to do most powers whilst moving, how is it significantly different from all other MMO's?

The main one that bugs me is having to physically push a key to block. It's annoying, and is a royal pain on mouse and KB. Next is, or was, I understand they have changed it, Power Up. This seems like changing something just for the sake of it. To me, those two alone are fundamentally different from other MMO's. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I don't like how they have implemented it.

Fair enough. Personally, I quite like the powerup thing (makes awesome attacks feel more awesome!) and never bother blocking, so it didnt really affect me

I can see why that might be irritiating though.

I quite liked the combat being less standard MMO-like. My combat technique was mostly mash-mash-mash on the keys, apart from the charging obviously. Sometimes I'd mash on the block button. I love the character creation.

I saw on XPlay yesterday that they are trying to put it on the Xbox as well. I would assume a lot less kb controls to make it fair if that happens ?

Given that the controls guide on the beta site was on a 360 pad, I'd say they had it in mind right from the start :)

I know this is a crazy thing to suggest, but do you reckon you'd be able to use the same game account on the PC and Xbox? That would be awesome.

hmm...now see...that to me makes it less than a CoH 2 as I thought it was going to be.

I mean...in CoH/V you had access to 30 powers(3 rows/10slots). I used 10-20 powers on my Brute every fight. There's no way to translate that to a 360pad unless they use an f'n combo list you have to memorize.

Sorry for the rant...I just despise memorizing combo's as I have no memorization skillz....

Which is why every single Street Fighter type game for me just ends up as button mashing.

Leveling up is done through going to a tiny lag-free area full of people and talking to a guy behind a desk.

At level 6 I got to choose some fancy perk-like abilities, choose my research path (I went for science, allowing me to craft scientific gadgety things) and pick a transport power.

Going from memory there were a lot more, with advantages/disadvantages.
Ice flight, shooting a beam of ice through the air to ride on.
Jet boots, iron man rockets in your heels.
Hover disc, earch clump etc for riding around on.
Regular flight, teleportation etc.

Thought that was interesting. Chose jet boots for my robot chap.
