Full HD Date wipe

I need to return a faulty Ext HD i bought last week from Littlewoods.

However it does have personal pics and vids of the family on it. What's the best way / software to ensure that everything is wiped off it forever, so even the boffins at Seagate wont be able to recover the content!!

One pass should be enough, but if you're feeling paranoid run 7 or more passes. Be warned, each pass will take fucking forever.

This, 1 pass pseudorandom should be fine, unless you've been downloading stuff from sheriff's collection.

Though, if it's the kind of faulty that doesn't work at all, it might not be possible.

If the drive doesn't work, there's not much you can do, but if it's a proper brand, use their RMA procedure, as they'll always wipe drives. nothing to some littlewoods putting it back in a box and flogging it off cheap.

It works fine for a while and is nice and quiet when not in use. Try using a file that's on it and it starts clicking like a dimented dolphin !! It sounds like the arm is sticking or damaged but does work (just) at the moment !

RMA it with seagate, might cost you a bit more, but the data will be destroyed properly.

This is a boot disk solution:
Boot and Nuke - http://www.dban.org/

Pretty easy to use but even the "quick" mode takes a few hours. Careful not to wipe the wrong drive.

does it work with usb drives? I've never checked.

There's an EXE which makes a floppy or USB bootable thing. I've only used the CD.
