If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

PowerLine Networking

Post by TheJockGit »

Need some info if poss, as some of you bummers know i have my PC in the Conservatory at the back of my house. I am getting Cable Internet Providings from Virgin on Tuesday but the box and gubbings will all be where the telly is at the front of the house.

Didn't want to go wireless as last time i tried it for gaming it was shit.

I have found this though and wondered if anybody has had any experience of it.

Cheers in advance.. :)

Didn't someone else ask about these a while back? My memory is telling me they're not good, but don't quote me on that.

What was wrong with the wireless last time jock? Was it losing connection all the time or just laggy?

Have a read of this it's a hexus review of two quite popular pln solutions.

I've never had extended experience of pln, I did try it a few years ago and it was crap. No doubt the advancements are such that it's much better by now.

Iif your house is reet old then it could well be shit because the wiring is shit, or it could be good if the wiring was high quality when it went in. It could well be that if the builder of your conservatory placed a new power loop in for it then it may well be shit too, but it could be excellent. I think there's more factors beyond your control as to whether it's good or not.

Try it and if it's no good get a refund, try the same with a good wireless router too, so you have settings to manipulate.

Or just grab some cat 5 and drill holes in walls! :P

 there's little need for that, but as cat6 is affordable now, there's no reason not to use it :P

i bought a triple-breastedpack of netgear 200mb jobbies, HDX101's when i was in my last flat and was having issues with wifi.

Still have them if you are interested. They work pretty nicely, much better than wifi in my experience, and much better lag. Although of course nothing compares to proper networking. If i were you, i'd install fibre all over the place. But if you cant, then powerline stuff will be fine, especially if its just for the internet connection - the bottleneck most likely will be the broadband not the powerline adapters.
