Xbox live ceased to function about a month ago, and I managed to trace the problem to my router, a wireless Netgear MR314. Have had a few probs with it in the past, but opening ports and such seemed to fix it.
Now it just won't work at all, it seems there was a bit of a clumsy patch (automatically) applied to the 'box to make it function with some router which had the unfortunate side effect of shutting down the MR314. It's now listed as a "tested, doesn't work" router on the XBlive site. Despite working okay for 2 years previously.
Anyway I bought the XBlive-approved Linksys WRT54GC
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellit ... torWrapper
which, apart from being too small to actually be allowed, functions perfectly, with no special xBox configuration required. Got it from Overclockers, who were ace - they had it delivered to work, despite it being my first order with them, and it arrived next day, despite me choosing the cheapest postal option. Was cheaper than Dabs or Ebuyer, who both insist on first orders being delivered to the home address, which is no use at all, really.
There was a cheaper XBlive-approved option with a d-Link router, and while appearance is usually the last thing on my list, forgive me but I went for the box 1/8th of the size with a Cisco logo on.
