I wouldn't go so far as to say I was "excited", but it looks interesting. I don't suppose O2 will allow USB tethering for non-business customers, considering the unlimited data allowance.

I would be but I have an iPod, so Copy & Paste is going to cost me a tenner.
I could just not update, but with the new SDK I guess there'd be no new/working apps. Essentially, it's a ransom.
Still no background apps. Access to music though, so a catalogue-based TapTapRevolution, Guitar Hero or AudioSurf might be do-able.

I've seen no mention of whether the update turns the iPod in to a competent media player with such amazing features of Playlist management, a useful Cover Flow or a half-way intelligent Resume.

Remember, this is the company that charges you a hundred quid for a service pack.

That is a bit off. Considering, like you said, that it will probably be required for future apps which you may pay for.

Apple charges for the major iterations of the OS, not bundles of patches like service packs. Patches to OSX are free, iterations including significant changes and additions are paid for. Although I'm not saying you get your monies worth. £100-200 for a new Microsoft OS that's worse than the previous is also not getting your monies worth. Not that I've paid for an OS ever.

Which Apple gets money for at
a) SDK purchase
b) Sale of App
If I want an application or a game I will gladly hand over some cash for it. I'm not so keen on handing over cash in order to keep said purchases functional. I didn't sign up to a subscription.
