42" TV - LCD or Plasma

I'm Going to buy a new 42" 1080p TV today but can't decide on the flava. I've read in some places that once you get to 42" then Plasma should be considered over LCD.

Any thoughts or recomendations. Max budget is £750 with delivery.

Nah, Not for me. I wouldn't want to see any cables and as We live in RAF Married Quaters it might not go down too well if i start cutting channels in the walls and then plastering over them just to hide cables!!

SAMSUNG!!

I'm looking for a 42" for you atm. I've had 3 Samsung HDTV's mate and not had a single problem with any of them.

You really don't want a Plasma. For the size of living room in quarters you'd need to borrow my aircon unit whenever you wanted to watch a film. That and the current gen models still eat leccy like there's no tomorrow.

Quick check of Currys turned up a Samsung LE40A556 40" for £599 all the 42's were silly pricey and all the 42" Plasmas were coming with 5.1 setups.

I saw a toshiba 42" 1080p LCD tv advertised for £499.99 yesterday, unfortunately I have no idea who it was advertising it but you might be able to find it somewhere.

My old man has a toshiba regza. Damn good picture and a weeny bezel around the screen (I don't like big fat bits of plastic forming the enclosure) He got his from comet. It was about a grand though.

They have this too, it's the same tv with 100hz flicker free/game mode/other crap - link!

As for lcd/plasma - Plasma still has the edge in flesh tones and black on screens looking black. But they cost more to run, can't go too near heat sources, suffer from burn in a bit more and generate plenty of heat. I'd go lcd.

I don't mean to hijack your thread but I currently have a 32" LCD which only outputs 720p and 1080i. I have some spare dosh and was considering getting one with 1080p for my PS3, am I going to notice the difference between 720p and 1080p?

I doubt it considering the PS3 can't do 1080p in 99% of it's games, it just up scales 720p.

You will notice a hell of a difference whilst watching Blu-Ray Films. However like he says most PS3 games and SKY HD only output 720p or upscaled 1080i

I watch about 3-5 Blu-Ray movies a week and it's pissing me off knowing i'm not seeing the whole picture, that's why i'm getting one !

I was playing with the resolution with Dead Space on the PS3. It outputs 720p by default and as a test I forced it to output 1080p. The difference in the resolution was obvious but it made everything a lot darker and rendered the game unplayable, so I switched it back. It might have been the fault of my TV but I thought I'd throw that out there.

I thought if on the back of the game case it lists 720p, 1080i, 1080p then it means it supports all three of those resolutions ie, it doesn't upscale it supports them natively?
Also like Jew I'm always aware when watching Bluerays that I'm not seeing it to it's max potential and it bothers me.

John Lewis have a panasonic lcd 1080p 42" for £550 atm. Better than the Sony which is £200 more too.

Plasma have superior blacks, and a superior viewing angle.

LCD lasts longer (twice as long) and is cheaper.

I've seen both, and for proper film watching plasma wins. For daytime telly watching may as well go LCD and save some notes.

Not sure if you can get it under £750 yet, but the Sony Bravia KDL-40W4500 is awesome. Got it a while ago, no regrets! It manages to make standard-def TV look pretty damn good too.

Also, it's got a heap of other useful things, like an ethernet port... yes, my Fista PC can see it on the network, and stream audio/video to it. The TV can browse my mp3s and videos, so I can pick things to watch using the TV remote :-) Oh and a USB port, that works with digital cameras, iPods, and card readers. Amoung other things.

As with all LCDs, you have to get it set up right - especially with turning the backlight down, turning OFF dynamic contrast etc.

Does anyone else's OCD kick in when you're round someone elses' house, and their big expensive TV is very clearly in its out-of-box setup, or worse, been "played" with so the blacks are all bleached out? *grinds teeth* Must. Resist. Urge. To. Fix...

And when watching SD telly it all looks shit so doesn't really matter what you get.

Sony and Panasonic have better electronics, many use the same panels so it somes down to the processing which makes a big difference.
