Extremely bad fps in everything

hehe, that knocked about 5 degrees C off the temp, i've now also stuck a huge desk fan facing down into the side air intake thing and i'm going to see if its made any diff to fps, if not i'll open the side of the case and point the desk fan in.

There not much point in me re-doing the themal grease, if i'm taking the fan off i might aswell put a new fan on so i think its about time i got a new fan, i think my mam still wants to phone tech support though but i doubt they'd give me a silent fan, just a new really loud thing.

w00t! problem solved, kind of... my fps are as they were before my fan fudged up, so i think its new fan tiem, temps are still in the 70s when playing a game so i reckon if my new fan can keep it below 70 i'll get even higher fps than i used to.

yup.

i'd say look at spending £15-20 on a new heatsink and fan, it'll do better than an OEM or cheapy one.

Whats the noise levels like on that one? The s775 fans i've been looking at all seem to be pretty big exept that one. I need a fan thats nearly completely silent, not so much in games but definately on the desktop since at the moment i need to wait for cold days so i can listen to my music...

Edit: and would i need to remove my mobo to fit it on s775? i dont really want to have to do that.

this. In general, the more copper in the heatsink the better. also try to get one with a 90mm fan on it.

It's much quieter than the fan/sink I got with the CPU. It will help with the noise of your setup but it wont make your whole PC near silent, all the other fans add to the noise, my graphics card has always been the noisest thing in my PC.

I didn't need to do anything with my mobo to install the new fan, the mounts were the same, but I can't be sure your one would be the same

I've had _near_ silent machines in the past, even then you can hear HDDs working and suchlike.

It doesnt have to be perfectly silent, at least quiet enough so i dont notice it over the top of my music like my current fan...

I've been doing a bit of research on that kamaboko fan and i'm not sure it'd be powerful enough to cool my p4. I found a review where they used an AMD Athlon 64 2.475GHz and got these results, but p4s run a lot hotter than a64s dont they?

You think it'd be good enough and do you think i'd be able to run it on the low speed setting? As long as it stays below 70 i'm happy.

This model especially: "Zalman CNPS7700-CU".. My friend owns one of these, with an Athlon 64 3200. But it cools it to below Room temperature!..

My P4 2.6GHz runs at about 40°C, it once went up to 50°C and the alarm went off.

Thanks for the reccomendations deject but they all seem to be a bit big. I think i'm going to go for the Speeze Chillmax. It runs at 22db maximum and it kept a 3.6ghz p4 at 58C under load in a review so it should keep my 3.4ghz p4 a bit cooler still.

I'm going to check my local computer shop first to see what he's got, if he's got anything good and can fit it for me thats even better since I'm not sure what i'm doing with the cpu cooler.

Its normally pretty simple. Make sure you clean off all the old thermal grease before reapplying. The CPU cooler you get, should come with some. And.. A good Screwdriver is needed to fit Socket A's.. I've never tried fitting Cooler on an intel though. They'll have some diagram on the box of the cooler surely?

Oh yes- make sure your motherboard already has a Retention Guide fitted f your new fan needs one. The stock heatsink on my P4 had its own mount. They're cheap (QuietPC again) and easy to fit, but that's little compensation if you have to go and buy one mid-build.

You're kidding me? .. Pfft.. And seriously, You're getting ripped off if your cooler didn't come with grease, even my fairly cheap (Less than £20) cooler came with a copious supply of the stuff.. (Yes, I could make pretty patterns that made it look like my CPU excited me greatly :D)

I've been to the computer shop and i'm geting a Thermaltake silent 775 fan. Unfortunately they cant get it in until the 4th of october so I've lost my pc for another week or so since i left it with them...
