I'd forgotten this until I logged into ubisoft for rainbow six stuff and it popped up in the vidja player. Looks like it could be rather aces!

I've looked more and it looks poo.

Only had a quick look, but at least they've done the controls properly on both the pc and 360.

WASD being pitch and roll (analogue stick) and yaw being seperate.

Thank fuck really, that was the downfall of Crimson Skies on the xbox. Arcade controls meaning you couldn't fly properly let alone do funky maneuvers.

I wonder if I would be any better at this when I use a joystick, seeing at how it's aimed at a more joystick-less audience.

Yes.

I can be 95% sure that the keyboard will suck, hardly anyone implements scaled controls anymore (basically, hold it down longer and it gets faster), so having a joystick will make it much better. It's an educated guess based on the fact the 360 has an analogue stick.

Besides, flight games are always better on joystick.

And you get to shout Tally Ho with more gusto!

The only reason why I kept my Athlon 1.2 Ghz, with it's Voodoo 5 and running Win2k is to play in no short order:

X-Wing,
Tie-Fighter,
X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter,
X-Wing Rogue Squadron.

All the stuff about it being a server test bed is crap, I only used it two or three times for that during my HND for screencaps.

Everything else runs on WinXP: Sturmovic, X-Wing Alliance, Crimson Skies etc...

:)

All the X-Wing games were very good at least (XvT) and awesome at best (all the others). However I don't class Rogue Squadron as one, it was a cheap console port that was briefly entertaining.

Should enjoy this if it's anything like Ace Combat. Flight Sims on PC are a tad too realistic for my liking and thus I find them too hard.

So, you've had a few more days.

Does it play well, handle well, and is fun?

I have to admit, I looked a the offical flyable aircraft, and glee'd slightly at the chance to hop in an F-14 and reenact Top Gun.

yes, yes and yes.

Its great fun. Heavy on the arcade shooting and light on the "sim", but personally thats how I like it. Its realism is about at the same level as, say, Crimson Skies. But more modern, obviously.

My only concern for it is that it might get a bit repetitive.

In that case, I'll be buying it methinks.

Crimson is one of my favourite flight games for mainly that reason, sure, it's a little bit buggy, but the controls are correct (pitch, yaw and roll being seperate and as important as each other), it's brilliantly funny, and it's not silly realistic nor too arcadey. And it's bloody fun.

And it's not an EA game too boot either :)
