Hints on mining and refining 'roids
Hi All
I've been playing for a few weeks now and need to make some serious money to buy my next ships, so I've decided to try mining & refining.
At the moment I'm using a cheap transport ship (3,000 cargo hold & 1 mining laser) to mine Scordite in security level 1.0 systems.
Can anybody offer me any advice on whether to sell the raw ore or process it first?
I'd also be interested in anybodies comments on which ores are the best to mine, bearing in mind my ship has bugger all shields and no combat weapons.
Any help on how maximise my profit would be much appreciated.
PS my in-game name is "Kod Ak", feel free to message me any time.

First off, mining in a hauler is madness incarnate. Unless you are afk mining.
You'll be far better off mining in a ship that can fit more mining lasers, dumping to a can and then going for your hauler to drag it back to a station for selling.
If you are mining stuff like scordite, you are generally better off selling it raw unless you have decent refining skills, which im guessing you dont. However, if you have a work with some of the 5punkorp fellas, im sure theres someone who would refine it for you, making you a lot more money.

this...i think im using the same ship as you, the 'bestower' its absolutely crap for mining, but you can probably also make a profit if u go do mining with people and you be the one who picks up all the ore and gets a nice big cut in the profitJoose wrote:First off, mining in a hauler is madness incarnate. This^^. AFK mining is not as profitable as it used to be. Everybody’s doing it nowadays and there isn't many 1.0 systems around with roids big enough to fill an indy. If you (or anybody else) take this route I would suggest you invest in a basic survey scanner that way you can ensure the roid won't pop as soon as you leave the keyboard.First off, mining in a hauler is madness incarnate. Mining to a can is the more profitable option. This can be done with a ship of any size, even a noob ship. However, I would suggest you upgrade to miner IIs as soon a you can, they will pay for themselves time and again. As your funds increase, increase your ship size so you can mount more miners on it. As you're mining to a can you don't really need to worry about cargo space very much but you may need to upgrade the electronics on you ship to fit the miner IIs. Afraid I'm not up on Caldari ships so I can't give you advice here. Some people like mining drones, which you might want to look into in the future. They do work well in 0.8 to 1.0 systems were the rats are sparse and weak. Any systems with a lower sec and you run into the risk of being jumped by larger rats and you may lose valuable escape time as you try to reel them in (and there's always that last drone who refuses to come home). I prefer to load up with battle drones, that way I have a bit of protection from rats if I wish to mine in lower sec space. Mining to a can does have its risks however, you are always open to ore thieves, unless you use secure cans which are impractical in most instances.
I have refining and refining efficiency to level 5 and Veldspar, Scordite, Plagioclase, Kernite and Hemorphite precessing to level 4 if anybody’s interested. Refined scordite used to be the most profitable amongst the lower ores, but I could be wrong as I haven't updated the prices in my spreadsheet for a while. However, if you have a work with some of the 5punkorp fellas, im sure theres someone who would refine it for you, making you a lot more money.

Now adays the most profitable ore is Plagoclase. Rich Plagoclase if you can find it, then Azure Plagioclase and finially Plagoclase. The reason for this is that the rich variant have 10% more mexallon than the standard stuff, while azure only have 5% more. Doesn't sound like much, but if you mine 70,000 units of the stuff, it's a hefty bonus.
Below that is Massive Scordite, then Condensed and finially Scordite. Marvelous stuff if your mining in 1.0 system, but really you want to be in 0.9 where the plagoclase is.
If you can get cover and really want to reel in the money mining head to Frulegarwhere you can find Omber. Of all the empire ore, this is the best for making money off as it has nice amounts of isogen, as well as some pyerite and tritanium. Some would argue that Kernite is better, and fair play to them if they can find it in decent quantities and get it hauled every time they mine, but for solo mining it's far too large, so I prefere Omber. Reason being that omber is 0.6M3 per unit, while Kernite is 1.2M3 per unit, so you can only mine half as much before your cargohold fills up.
Hope that helps.
