Just for my own amusement, I had a look at what our guild consists of and did a bit of an analysis (pffft, anal). I found the results quite interesting.
Class by popularity:
1. Mage (9)
2. Warrior (8)
3. Death Knight (8)
4. Paladin (6)
5. Rogue (6)
6. Druid (4)
7. Hunter (4)
8. Priest (4)
9. Warlock (3)
10. Shaman (2)
Mage is the most popular class, but looking at the average levels shows a different story:
Class by average level:
1. Death Knight (67)
2. Shaman (44)
3. Warrior (35)
4. Paladin (35)
5. Warlock (32)
6. Priest (28)
7. Hunter (28)
8. Mage (27)
9. Rogue (21)
10. Druid (20)
The Death Knight throws things a little, as they start at 55, but I'd say this shows how likely someone is to stick at a class once started. However, it still isn't quite accurate, so...
Class popularity by main (approx. lvl55+):
1. Death Knight (2+)*
2. Warrior (2)
3. Paladin (2)
4. Mage (2)
5. Shaman (1)
6. Priest (1)
7. Warlock (1)
8. Rogue (1)
9. Hunter (0)
10. Druid (0)
*lvl70+
Death Knights throw the results a bit again - they haven't been around for long and don't take as long to get to high level. Even so, from observations and stats I'd say we have at least 4 people who would consider their main to be a Death Knight.
A couple of other interesting stats:
We have 2 lvl80 characters, both Death Knights. Before that our highest characters were 2 lvl70 Warriors, by the same players. Both Warriors remain at 70.
I Love Horses has seven 70+ characters.
While we have more Mages than any other class, only two have ever reached level 35.
Despite being the most popular solo class, nobody has played a Hunter over lvl43.
Our highest level Druid was imported from another server.
Priest, Warlock, and Shaman, despite being the least popular classes, have a high proportion of people sticking with them.
Joose has the most alts.

Interesting stuff. I love my Rogue character - great for soloing and being a sneaky shit. The thing that after playing a Deaf Knight for a few levels I can't really see myself going back. I think it's because of the massive gameplay difference that has injected new life into the game for me.
As a subtlety focused Rogue I had to carefully pick my targets and work my way around mobs. As a DK I actively go around herding mobs up. I think I've mentioned previously that you sometimes get a sense of invulnerability playing DK (that said I've never played as a Warrior class).
I didn't get along with the Mage I created. Found it very frustrating that you could get maybe 1 or two ranged spells off before being pummeled in the face (admittedly I never played to the level you get a pet thing).

It's weird, for me the DK is more tanky than my not really very tanky warrior, so it's a big change for me too, but it's a good one, especially given you basically get to be death on legs with a pet made of death.Roman Totale wrote:As a subtlety focused Rogue I had to carefully pick my targets and work my way around mobs. There seems to be a strange mix of classes. Deaf Knight isn't surprising, neither is Warrior or Paladin. I'm surprised not to see more Hunters though, since we're pretty much a solo PvE guild.
So far I've tried:
Hunter - Quite fun. I'd have liked to have a large collection of unusual pets. Having a tank ready as a ranged DPS class makes it playable.
Shaman - I love my Enhancement Shaman. Nice mix of critical based melee DPS and instant cast spells mean I can survive for quite a while as long as my mana holds up. Very self-sufficient, some nice spells (combat heal, walk on water, extra hearthstone, self-res), and not a great deal of downtime.
Rogue - I only played up to about lvl12 or so, so I might not have got a great picture of them, but I found progress very slow. Great DPS and alpha, but seemed very flimsy so as Roman said I had to plan out my attacks. I did like having Roman about on instances to thin out the mobs before we went in though.
Warrior - I got bored of all the Warriors I started pretty quickly. Coming from a DPS background I got bored shitless during combat due to the tankiness. Maybe if I had taken more time to go DPS I might have gotten more out of it.
Warlock - I found my 'Lock to be very much like a Hunter. Nice pets, decent ranged DPS. I'm only on about lvl22, but I enjoy it and I seem to kick out tons of damage.
Paladin - Tried Retribution spec, and after my Shaman it's my second most played class, to about 32. Seemed to get weaker as I levelled up, but the new patch has apparently made them quite powerful now.
Death Knight - I've not played mine much, but watching other people play them I have to say they deserve their elite status. They seem to tank well and do great DPS, as well as having some nice utility stuff. Seems like you can make them do pretty much anything apart from healer and ranged DPS. Unfortunately there's millions of the bastards around.
Think next time I start a newbie I'll go for Druid.

Rogues are exceptionally useful in groups, it's just that soloing is difficult due to the aforementioned problems with mobs etc. Also agree with how flimsy they are - considering the amount of threat they generate their health is quite low, even when specced for stamina (on the other hand high agility gives good dodge levels, but that's bugger all use if you're being attacked by more than 2 bad dudes).

I'm enjoying my Shaman as well, although not one of my 'original toons' due to lack of expansion, but filling my need for a jeweler/blacksmith nicely. Solo's well, has healing, buffs, and can wear leather, nice for a caster.Dog Pants wrote: Hunter - Quite fun. I'd have liked to have a large collection of unusual pets. I've played my rogue up to 16 so it can unlock boxes that I pick up in loot. Solo IS a challenge, but I liken it to guerilla warfare. Slim down the perimeter before aggroing the central group. NOT always easy, but with DPS like they have, it's a balance imho. (I'd like to interject that they are NOT the only class that can open locks, as I learned later...)Dog Pants wrote: Rogue - I only played up to about lvl12 or so, so I might not have got a great picture of them, but I found progress very slow. No my first character, (that was a priestess), but MUCH easier to solo with past level 25. Love the changes to pet training, no longer having to pay to train them is nice. Also love the glyphs and demonology school. Makes demons a nice tank, and I'm working throught theh instances in game solo with this toon, need to do gnomer next.Dog Pants wrote: Warlock - I found my 'Lock to be very much like a Hunter. My pally is a gathering toon! Has mining and skinning, nice bonii to critical hit and stamina that way. Strictly NOT doing quests for the moment, just running about, killing, mining, and levelling. (Aside from the pally quests, learned that's the only way to get their res skill)Dog Pants wrote: Paladin - Tried Retribution spec, and after my Shaman it's my second most played class, to about 32. My daughter and I have a druid, but it's 'hers'. I play the Priestess(Herbology/Potions) Warlock (Tailor/Enchanter) Rogue (skinning/leatherwork) Shaman (jeweler/blacksmith) Pally (mining/skinning) and a Mage (skinning/Inscription).Dog Pants wrote: Think next time I start a newbie I'll go for Druid.
We play all of our toons fairly regular, her play style likes the easier beginning levels, (she's 9, but learning fast!), so I leave her some toons at lower level to play with. She loves the idea of a hunter and tons of pets, but also likes playing my Warlock, because it can ride horses, (only toon above level 30, I blame her insistance on all the toons... hehe).
She has one 'utility' toon that she deletes regularly, and that's a full roster on one server. That toon will be our DK toon someday, then she'll have to play 'build-a-toon' on a different server.
I'm surprised you don't have more locks/hunters. They are win for bringing their own tank to a fight, and being able to run away if the tank looks like it won't make it! I especially love the lock's ability to use soul shards to make self-res and healing bits. Quite nice compared to lugging about tons of potions, which you can only use one of during a fight anyway. The health stone gives you one more edge to get through fights.
Sorry for long post, thanks for reading.
Oh, and most of our toons are female humans, and must dress 'attractively'. It's my daughters rule, I hate when she complains about mismatched outfits....
Even the 'look' of the weapons is important... you should see my banks....
Rogue: I always pick the high dps / no tank classes as I think they horse a tactical style of play, which keeps things interesting.
I've got my rogue to lvl 19 in 6 days and I've enjoyed it. The quests are beginning to thin out a bit but that's not class-specific. Getting your combo points up for a ridiculous damage finale seems to be the bread and butter. I can typically kill 2 equal level baddies before I'd die. The rogue does suffer against multiple sniping baddies, but it can sneak up and surprise sex a lone sniper. Being able to ninja pwn one guy and then stealth up to de agro his friends is a life saver too.
(by sniper I mean a ranged class, it's an eve term probably)
I'm looking forward to dabbling with some poisons at level 20. That should mix it up a little.

Okay lads, I'm going to play a bit of wow this Christmas, but not enough so i get sucked into it like i did over the summer, free of exams.
So I'm not going to play my main account with my lvl35 rogue, but do a trial, which should make sure i don't play on it for that long. Damn game is like crack.
Class suggestions?
