FFXI 14 day trial
For those that might be interested FFXI now has a 14 day trial. I think as of this time it might be only for North American players, but if it goes like everything else EU players should be allowed soon too.

If you do sign up Dolly and I both play on the Leviathan server. Be sure to say hi.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be unpleasant. That seems to be most of the internet's opinion on any new MMONG, which I've expressed several times since WAR was released. If you thought that's what we were saying too, you've missed the point.Hehulk wrote:
Aww come on, I was only paraphrasing the last few pages of the warhammer thread, no need to resort to name calling

They just announced a CoX-like level equalising system which sounds quite smart, it now downgrades your high-spec items when you enter a low-level instance, rather than unequipping them and works the other way around, too.MORDETH LESTOK wrote:If we do play...can we *play* with you? or you too l33t for us?
FFXI was my first MMO, as a fan of the single player games I'd been looking forward to it for ages, but it wasn't released in the UK until years (literally) after Japan and then the US, and was actually quite hard to get hold of - the euro release already had two expansions bundled.
I don't know if it's still the case, you only got one character slot and had to pay extra for more, plus if you unsubscribed they deleted your characters after a month and you had to actually go out and buy a another copy of the game to play again.
So apart from the fact I was surrounded by people who had been playing for a year or more, I was a total newbie at the genre as well and hadn't got a clue about the new vocabulary that sprang up seemingly out of nowhere: mobs, dots, hate, pulls, etc.
My inexpertise made it hard to progress because I understood neither the mechanics of the game nor the argot of the other players, but the draconian penalties for cancellation meant I kept paying way longer that I intended and that left a bad taste.
Game-wise I found it a little grindy and hard to solo or travel very far beyond the start area, and even when I overcame my embarrasment and tried to group, not many people were interested in teaming with a low-level Taru Red Mage when they were all running around as epic classes.
What it did well was having a unified realm-wide Auction House system, long before WoW ever thought of it, as well as level-unrestricted professions - it was perfectly possible to play an enjoyable trade character without ever leaving the start town. Also everyone's on the same servers, worldwide - even the console players, and you can even talk to the Japanese players with a clever translation feature where you select words from a preset list.
What annoyed were the hordes of obvious fishing-macro users lining the docks, people setting up shops every few steps and spamming, and characters constantly trying to chat each other up.
It's high on the best of the rest list ( http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart7.html ) with half a million current players, which it's maintained for years.
I don't know if I've forgiven it yet, though.
Most of your complainants have been fixed, yeah there are not alot of low level people but with level sync I've been leveling my 70 monk with level 20 people. All the macro fishers are gone and rmt too. But it does take a bit to level solo and you need help with most quests still, but they tweaked the xp for easy prey monsters to give a bit more to make soloing a bit more worthwhile.
As for deleting your toon, they've always stayed for half a year afaik, I've known people getting them back after more then a year. You do have to pay 1$ for each additional toon but it's not too bad when it's only $12 a month to begin with.
