If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Display drivers b0rked

Post by Wiggy »

When doing random shit on my computer I get my screen going blank and an error saying 'The display driver nvlddmkm has stopped working'. Think it may be a graphics driver issue (even though I've updated the drivers to the latest version and it still happens), has anyone come across this before?

Had a poke about, doesn't seem a particularly rare issue.

In no particular order, I'd do memtest (just to be safe), uninstall the current drivers and clean them with driversweeper or suchlike, turn it off and on again, Try older drivers.

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=65161 and stuff linked from there might be handy too.

:above: Pretty much that.

Give it a full clean of nvidia drivers (drivercleaner or ccleaner) and try older ones or newest beta ones. Given the majority of people in that thread report no problems with xp but lots in fista then I would assume it's codez not your hardware.

What were you doing to get the problem?

Used to get Blue Screen "Driver entered infinite loop" on my ATI, even after updates. Believe me, a cleandriver or something like that does wonders.

Okay, It's properly fucked now.

- Alt-tabbed out of WoW, when going back in it froze and went a shade of blue, had to press the reset button to get it working again.
- Little lines appear on the WinXP loading screen, when it goes to the login screen everything is scrambled, looks a bit like Tetris.
- It can boot into safe mode, when I load up Speedfan it says that Temp 3 is 115C (don't know if this is my graphics card). Also, the -12V rail appears to be running at -17V

Any ideas? narf I miht just fuck it off and get a new PSU and graphics card and be done with it,

Think you've covered it all there. Sounds like a voltage problem has shagged your gpu.

Turn it off, leave it off until new parts arrive. Hope psu hasn't fucked anything else up.

Okay, no problem.

Um... spec me a PSU and GPU? Looking to spend max 300 quid, I'm quite ok for cash at the mo :) Prefer nVidia :P

Nice psu with overhead for future power needs - Corsair 620w modular

Card= tricky right now. A 4870 is probably as much as you'll want to splash on, better than Nvidias offerings atm.

If it has to be nvidia I'd say a 9800 gtx+ but for the same price a 4850 is better for high resolution stuff.

Is more future proof than the 9800, but I just don't like them. Too much money not enough go imo, lazy effort from nvidia.

or a gtx260. :P

While ATI do have the better hardware, their drivers are pretty shoddy, I'd probably take nvidia if i wanted happy stable gaming with minimal fucking about
