Hmm. Looks a bit iffy to me in places.

6-11 I can't argue with, nor 1 or 4. but the others in the top 11? not so sure.

Yeah, a wierd top 20 or so there. I'm glad Citizen Kane wasn't at number one, but I only really agreed with one or two. Indiana Jones in second place? How odd.

Why's HEAT so far up...yes, excellent shootout...but the rest of the movie was meh!

Empire Strikes Back better than the original Star Wars? Not!

whoops...beertime! :ahoy:

one for the road....Superman Returns...wrong list!

I have a lot of problems with that list. Only film that deserves to be in the top 5 is Shawshank. Which should be #1 with the Green Mile somewhere close by followed by most of Kubrick's works. And why is Singing in the Rain so far down?

This needs to be a Pant's question of the week, Top 5-10 films ever made.

Never thought much of that film to be honest.

It's all subjective and utterly meaningless anyway.

I think Heat is overlooked by too many people as a sort of one trick pony. The character development and the way everything everyone does affects everyone else is done superbly well. Everything in the film has a purpose, but people only seem to look at the shootout.

Nothing truly offensive in the top 500, except Transformers, only 1 place behind Terminator.

Favourites of mine I didn't spot would be Two Mules for Sister Sara, Run Lola Run, Ghost Dog and The Longest Day - the latter being to my mind far more influential than any of the other war films listed, particularly on games.

I didn't really get the big deal over Heat either.

Lists like this is always going to be contentious and the very top slots are always occupied by the usual suspects (not The Usual Suspects, which I'm glad to see is quite high. But below Casino Royale, what?). I feel a more useful role of these charts is to highlight films that others consider great but you haven't seen or wouldn't even consider. And if you're interested in broadening your film vocabulary and enjoying some great cinema it's the best place to place to start.

For instance I noticed The Apartment at #12. I don't think I've even seen this film and yet I really like Jack Lemon, especially in The Odd Couple (which you should try). Perhaps also Glengarry Glen Ross, which is a good film and Lemon's performance is the basis for the Gil Gunderson character from The Simpsons:

It makes more sense when you know the history.

Anyway, I've used the IMDb top 250 list, which has provided me with some excellent films (and admittedly some which are hard work). I was going to give you a list of some films I think you should try but it's impossible. I ended assuming you'd seen all the newer (colour) ones and picking black and white ones which I really enjoyed. And some in the top 100 I didn't like that much.

Perhaps the best suggestion I can give is don't watch new crap just because it's easy, try something from a list like this. And also watch 12 Angry Men, the Henry Fonda version. And Laurence of Arabia.

I found Run Lola Run to be more interesting that enjoyable. But Ghost Dog and The Longest Day are must sees.

Also, Boondock Saints, didn't spot that either.

As you say, it's a good reason to check out new stuff. I'd never have considered them, but given the frequency they appear in top X lists, Ratatouille and WALL-E sound worth a watch. In addition, I don't think I've ever seen Singing in the Rain, beyond the obvious title song, and the Laurel and Hardy parody.
