Recommendations for headset

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Recommendations for headset

Post by FatherJack »

Was thinking of getting a headset this weekend, as my current headphones+mic combo is wanky - I have to lean forward and scoff the mic and still no-one can hear me. Noticed some of them had Skype deals, although how this will take off now Googletalk has arrived is unknown, although no-one I want to talk to has either.

Also want a new game, as Dungeon Siege 2 is not out until next week (and Hello Kitty: Roller Rescue the week after). Bought Pariah last week, but it's plop. Empire Earth II any good? Don't seem to be many new releases this time of year. Might try one of those other (non WoW) MMORPGs. Brothers in Arms? Boiling Point? Or I could <gasp> NOT get a game this week...

If I'd known you were trying to get Pariah, I could've forwarned you about its utter poor-ness. Dear me =( Empire Earth II seemed to be overly-complicated to me, and the AI was a bit dodgy. Guild-Wars for teh MMONG Winnar.

Hmm.
Headsets? I like the Creativ Headsets with the loop that goes around your ear and over the back of your head. Fits well, works well, lasts ages.

I have a Logitech Precision Gaming Headset, and it's great, especially for only $30. In my opinion it's the best value there is. of course, the general rule is the more you spend the better the headset...

as for a new game, I don't really know, because all I play now is Dungeon Siege 2 (hahaha, GO USA!), CS:S, and BF2 these days...

don't get the cheepy shitty ones from Game. They work alright, decent enough quality etc (for the price) put they mutilate your ears with discomfort.

as for new games, I'll second teh Guild Wars. Brilliant MMONG, without any subscription fee's. Win!

all you have to pay is $50 for the account. There's no sub fee. They do plan on charging for the expansions though.

It's impressive but the most buggy thing I've experienced, although there are patches available now so maybe it's better. Download it if you want to try it out.

I didn't know I was buying Pariah until I was in the shop and that's all there was.

Guild Wars is one of the £9.99 ones now, along with City of Heroes, that Star Wars one and umm, eome other one. I played the beta for a week last year during E3 and found it very easy to pick up and play, but a bit impersonal with the partying (ie: whoever was around at the time, then go seperate ways at next junction). Could be teh win, though - sick to death of WoW.

As for headsets how do they connect? USB? Does the speakers' sound go to the headphones like normal headphones. Bluetooth? Probably not a good idea, don't want to be transmitting those toilet breaks.

It sounds like a great idea, but is apparently ruined by bugs, the PC Format review was hilarious, something about a really cool moment where a leopard leaps out unexpectedly from the jungle and attacks you.

Second time round they found a good sniping spot up a cliff overlooking the clearing it comes into, the leopard leapt out into the clearing then proceeding to fly directly upwards and attack the player on the cliff from mid air.

DO NOT GET A USB HEADSET.

Basically, most will just connect to your soundcard's mic socket and line out, like headphones with a mic hanging off the front.

I'd suggest going for anything pretty cheap for a start and using it until it breaks (2-3 months) then getting something nicer :D

I use these > <a href="http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/cat ... L8794.html" target="_blank">Speedlink Medusa 5.1 Headphones</a>

Veh comfortable and they come in a box lined with fake red silk, so they must be good. And they're surround sound (apparently, although I can't tell the difference).

Can't say how good the mike is; any CODders testify to how clear my gibbering and cursing is?

USB makes your game slower!

why consume more resources when you have a sound card that is already using them? ANALOG BEYOTCH!

I'll um, not be getting a USB one then. I though for some reason they would all be USB now, I'm glad they're not - I don't want sound out of the speakers.

My USB headset seems to work okay, the sound doesn't come out of the speakers either. The only problem I've noticed is that I need to make sure it's plugged in before starting a game otherwise it's not recognised.

Plus I think the mic makes my voice deeper, I actually sound like joe pasquali in real life :D

joe pasquali must die

sennheiser pc150's are the only way top go in my opinion. probably the best £40 i ever spent on hardware. brilliant for music, gaming and anything else you care to speak of.
