May I suggest Read or Die (or R.O.D), it's good fun and the central librarian character is surprisingly cool. Also the Director of Spirited Away, Hayao Miyazaki, has some excellent work before SA and Mononoke. Try Castle in the Sky or Nausicaä. Anyone watched the Neon Genesis Evangelion series?

PS. Akira is a work of art, there's a redubbed version now which is much improved.

I'm always up for philosophical discussion, but I just thought it was done so cack-handedly - though naturally things will be lost in the translation.

But yes, the action sequences didn't particularly thrill me.

I liked the series, with the fights against the 7 angels or whatever, giant robot type things battling in a city, great stuff. Then I watched the movie finale with giant girl emerging from the planet, that was a load of b0ll0x.

Akira: actually does make sense. although i had to watch it a few times before i could figure out whats going on. But then, I get whats going on in the Illuminatus trilogy too, so i may just have an inbuilt understanding of wierd.

It looks pretty, and has won awards. but thats all i know.
