MMO Diaries - Perfect World

Post by Grimmie »

Hey, here's that MMO Diary I said I'd do some time.

A friend of mine suggested I give an MMO called <a href="http://perfectworld.com.my/">Perfect World</a> a try, today.
It's by a Chinese developer who have made a number of other MMOs and a few casual multiplayer games.

From what I could tell from their description, and the extremely slow Malasian branch of the website it contains your standard MMO stuff.

Character customisation appears to be a little more in depth appearance wise than some other MMOs I've played, somewhere between Eve-Online's fully 3D face editor, and CoH's costume editor in terms of choice. I'll deal with that more when I come to make Grimmie.

You get your standard shooty people, stabby people, magic people and nature people, and I'm told leveling revolves more around completing quests than it does grinding against mobs of enemies.

The client is 2.21GB and the website has a temperamental list of file mirrors, I'm downloading from the 'high speed' mirror provided on their site with the DTA download accelerator. I'm getting around 300kb/s and the ETA was 3 Hours.

Again, I know that there was more call for diaries on games that 5punkers would see themselves playing, but this is a personal project and I wanted to play something a little more unusual and not so mainstream.

The game's free and currently 50% downloaded.

Installation
Fairly painless. Extract the zip file somewhere, and run the installation .exe
Point it to somewhere in program files and hit next a few times.

Patching
The website is slow, and the patches are very slow.
I quit the autopatcher five minutes in and followed the rapidshare and mediafire links to the manual patches, only took a few minutes to download and even less time to install.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... Update.jpg">

The Engrish however is everywhere. The Malasian version of the game is loosely translated into English at the moment, but the developers hope to bring an American version out in Autumn.

Running the game
Once I was in a Chinese pop star began singing about his perfect world.
The game didn't understand my login information. Apparently you need to go back to the website you got your account from, and after negotiating their captcha system, 'activate' the game you want to play.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... tivate.jpg">

As soon as I did that, I was in, and greeted with this.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... cement.jpg">

Still a little buggy, it seems.

Characters come in three shapes.
Human, beast, and flying elf.

Humans are warriors and mages.
Beasts are either giant male tiger furries, or tiny lady fox girls.
Elves are archers and priests.

Grimmie is a male elven archer. He looks a bit girly though.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... tomise.jpg">

Customisation's pretty comprehensive.
About the same level that The Sims 2 offers, facial wise.

Pick a server and in you go.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... ewbies.jpg">

The tutorial system isn't too useful though.
I'll have a proper play around once I find the volume settings.

Smilies
MMO Regulars will be happy to know there's a smilie list and an action list.
The dance is a bit faaabulous though, nothing on the scale of Guild Wars.

Annd.. I have no idea.
Flying cats (:

Furries ho!

Looks very Eastern, and by that I mean fucking hatstand. I find myself noting the thigh length armoured stilettos the bird on the left is wearing. Are the human warriors big grizzly ugly smelly brutes? I'd like that, to offset all the pretty elveses.

The panda with the axes on a manta ray does little to turn down the faaabulous nature of this japano-mong. I do like how they have wings on their heads as well, just to accentuate the pointyness of the ears.

The elf people are the only race to be able to fly from level 0.
Everyone else has to be about level 30 before they can fly, and then you need to buy wings.

One nice touch is the ability to make 'combo skills', a skill you can put in your hotkey lists that acts as a macro of your other skills.
I currently have one that casts a water spell to slow my enemy down, a fire spell to fuck their shit up, and then a normal attack to finish them off by the time they reach me.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... /Macro.jpg">

Also, the game has penguins.
He didn't give me any lunch so I killed him.

Shada's trying to decide if he wants to play this with me
I told him I will kill one cat every minute he's not downloading the client.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... eadcat.jpg">

But probably not this one.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... ivecat.jpg">

This is a cat lady NPC person.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... atlady.jpg">

I also learnt a new spell on my mage lady. She can now throw rocks.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... dhorse.jpg">

There's a system where you can keep your armour on, but wear your 'stylish clothes' on top, to keep the stats you've gained from your armour set. This guy has a funky green jacket.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... jacket.jpg">

My lady befriended a polish bloke.
The game is slightly sexist, blokes can pick up girls and carry them around, and that's the only way you can do it.
Girls can get lifts from blokes, on foot, or on a mount.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/ ... rseman.jpg">

Or on a giant flying sword, thing.

We might have to start together then, I don't have a fluffy person yet.
My highest level person is a human, which lets you chose Mage or Warrior.

Mind if I tag along? I'll probably leave again in a day but I fancy something to dip my toe into.

edit: That's promising- only one of all the download links actually works. Including a torrent with no seeds.
