File Sharing

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

File Sharing

Post by Joose »

For some reason, filesharing just doesnt want to work between my XP machine and Mrs Joose's laptop. Ive done some of the more obvious pokings, and determined that the two machines wont ping each other either. Ive turned all firewalls off, and they still wont ping each other. Im guessing the two not talking to each other at all is the most likely cause of file sharing not working

Any clues?

right then...
also, is one wired and one wireless?

odd router config?
yes, mine is wired, mrs laptop is wireless
Is it a fista laptop?
yup
and are you using simiantech AV
nope

As for router settings, that seems unlikely, as the xbox can access my computer fine. But I will have a poke at some point and report.

My wondering is if your router is blocking connections between wired and wireless.

Can your xp machine see the fista lappy but not share stuff? Or can the machine not see it at all on a network even though they're both using it?

How can I check that? or, more importantly, make that not happen?

neither machine can see the other, not even for pinging.

I think I may have the solution.

download this onto your pc.

Make sure the network name on your pc and the lappy is the same, fista likes workgroup, xp likes mshome as standard names. Easiest to rename your xp to workgroup.

You may then need to tick boxes on the fista lappy allowing file sharing, this can be done via the bloody stupid network and sharing thingy.

Hopefully that should sort it.

i take it both machines can get on the web ok?

Open up a command console (Startmenu, run, type: CMD, hit ok)

Paste in there (rightclick paste):

ipconfig /all >> c:\ipconfig.txt

Grab the ipconfig.txt from the root of your C drive, and post it here. Do the same on the other PC as well. It'd be handy to see what is going on in there...

Are the IPs in the same subnet?

Can you ping if you use IPs instead of hostnames?

If using hostnames, check netbios is up and running on both machines, and no firewalls are blocking it.

Other possibility, although highly unlikely, it that they have the same IP.

Fista is a cupcake when getting it to talk to XP. Took me bloody ages and narf I couldn't tell you what I did to fix it in the end, cos it just seemed to start working one day.

If you get really annoying you can go into config.ini on the fista machine and turn off all the self-discovery notwork shite that fista pumps out every 5 fucking seconds.

How about removing Fista from the laptop and slapping an XP on it. Not only you get File Sharing, but you will get a bonus boost in performance as well!

Because that's a total bitch, near impossible with some laptops (unavailability of drivers) and if it's not an issue with the laptop's config, a complete and utter waste of time.

Just come across this problem again, so resumed fucking about. Rebooted router, no change. turned off every firewall/virus scanner I can find, no change. Plus laptop into Ethernet, and it works! ooh, must be the wireless, thinks I. unplugged and, sure enough, it stops working again. Reboot the router again, and suddenly it starts working again.

WT and indeed F?

End result: its working, and ive no idea why.
