I saw the first half of The Colour of Magic last night and thought it was good. Not particularly funny but it was entertaining enough in other respects. Anyone else watched it yet?

I'm going to :sweep: it sometime this week once more versions are out.

Apprehensive about David Jason playing Rincewind after playing Albert, doens't strike me as the Rincewind type and in my mind is too old for the part, I've heard he does a good job though.

:above: All of this. Rincewind should be younger and skinnier than David Jason and after playing Albert he shouldn't be doing Rincewind. Apparently he doesn't do the full body craven cowardice, it's a lot more laughy and jokey. But I will be :sweep: this.

Quite liked it, felt a little bit like a play at some points and Pratchett nearly fucked it up by doing a Tarantino and being in it - with similar cringe-inducing results, but he only has about three lines.

I'd always imagined Rincewind to be pretty old, perhaps not as old as Jason, what with all the running he does, but I thought he carried it off.

See the disco board for :sweep:

I was disappointed by the second half, I thought it was a mess. There seemed to be far too much happening and it was poorly edited. Watchable though.

I don't quite remember how I imagined Rincewind, it was nothing like David Jason though. That said, I can't see him on screen without thinking of "Only Fools and Horses", which I fucking despise.

Still, I'll have a look-see at the sweepings Jack has kindly uploaded and give it a go.

I just watched the first part and I'm very disappointed. I don't like David Jason's portrayal of rincewind. I don't like how they ignored bel shamharoth or the driads. I also don't like Jeremy Irons' attempt at the patrician, a rather unfunny lisp thing happening that makes him totally un-menacing in my eyes. I don't like twoflower either, acting is okay, but the lazy cover up of how he actually speaks morporkian is crap, plus he's samwise gamgee. Tim Curry playing trymon is a bit crap too, but I think all the wizards need to bigger and fatter. Even cutting short the whole wyrmberg story whilst actually generating the cg for it was annoying. And why skip the bit with the plane in the alternate reality? That would have been easy and funny and it was an unnecessary cut imo. I'll watch the second one and probably hate that too.

Also - Pratchett can write, but his acting really fucking sucks, the pompous cockend that he is.

Okay, watched the second part, thought it was shit too. In fact it's shitter. It glosses over most of the book to the extent that it seems like the light fantastic is really just the last few chapters of the colour of magic.

Even though the discworld universe isn't very developed at this point I still enjoy reading the rincewind story arc (interesting times is my favourite) and this adaptation has ham fistedly butchered both books.

I know it could never be an epic like LOTR but it could have been four episodes with two on each book or actually covered the book properly and not cut out hrun/bravd/weasel, the proper zlorf/ymir storyline, tethis the sea troll etc etc.

The best I can hope for is that it inspires people to go and buy the books and realise how good they are and how shit this adaptation was.
