Ok im currently running this system:

Mobo: ASUS P5N32-E SLI plus
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 2046MB RAM Corsair pc6400 xms yada yada
Hard Drive: 320 GB maxtor 7200
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320mb, 580mhz core & 1700mhz mem

The ram IMO is feckwank - doesnt run at the speed i need it to, thus governing my CPU, am i right?

I'm thinking of nuying 2gb of this gear:

What do your opinions say?

Nope.

The slower ram is a bit slower, but it won't really affect much in reality, unless you've really fucked up.

But you haven't, as the CPU is going the right speed.

Whe memory could be a slight bottleneck, but IMO nothing noticeable. Hell, I run 4gb of 6400 over 2gb of 8500, just because I feel the extra memory is more beneficial than the slight speed difference.

ok, thanks, so theoretically it'd be cheaper for me now and in the long run(presuming id end up buying another 2gb of the Dominator stuff) to just buy another 2gb of the ram i already have and run 4gb?

also, which will perform better under SLi? or does this not matter?

Yup, just double up what you have.

Probably doesn't make much difference to SLI, but i have no experience with it.

I have to set my memory to run in what the BIOS calls "SLI mode" to get it at (near) full speed. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with running two video cards, because I don't.

The only thing that shows any difference between running the RAM at 1066MHz instead of 800MHz is the Fista performance index thingy, 3D Mark etc scores were almost exactly the same. My FSB is 1066MHz, so I get no gains at all going beyond that with the RAM.

Having the OS and games on a pair of Raptors makes far more difference for me.

That could possibly mean dual channel mode, but I'd have to look at your specific motherboard's manual to know for sure.

It's a random setting on 680i chipsets that doesn't do much, usually just runs it at slightly higher speeds I think.

It opens up the options to set the CAS timings, all memory is locked at 800MHz otherwise. I was just highlighting the rather wooly terminology.

on my mobo there's an SLI mode (or was, until they removed it for being shit and broken)

and then a full set of overclocking options.

edit: Just looked. It was called "SLI ready memory" which made it use the memory's EPP. unfortunately, my mobo didn't like those speeds, and apparently it made the boards brick fairly regularly
