MMO Diaries
We need more MMO diaries.
I enjoy this idea.
Any ideas for MMOs that most of us have never played, that need to be documented?
RF online?
Everquest?
Matrix online?
If the price isn't ridiculously high I'd pay a month's subscription or take a free trial for the sake of 5punky research and laughs.
Might also be good as a two-person 'project' for a bit of fun and differing opinions.
Document character, backstory, gameplay, bugs, fun quests, regular mmo gubbins in a half diary/half review format over the period of the trial/subscription.

Any takers? Any suggestions for which one I should try?

This is a good idea, and I'd certainly offer my services for at least one game. However, I really lack the time to be able to make the most of it and so probably can't.
However, since I'm very new to MMONGS I feel my analysis would not be the most reasoned, but if an experienced and a novice MMONGER were to both try something out then that might be quite good. Beginning to sound horribly like organisation though, and we all know how good we are at that.

I'm not exactly experienced in MMOs, I've yet to find one that captures my attention fully for more than a month so I dont reach the 'endgame' stage, but I've dabbled in them enough to understand the mechanics I think.
I'd just like to try some more and see what I'm missing.
Lots of screenshots, tomfoolery etc. I won't be taking it too seriously.
If anyone reads 'Neverquest' at the back of the PC Zone magazine you might get and idea of what I'm aiming for.
Having someone who has no idea about MMO mechanics joining in would be insightful.

I'd like to try the weird ones too, the ones that people glance at and pull a face, just to give them a fair trial, and to share with 5punkers what they're missing ;DDog Pants wrote:Good idea Grimmie (although I would say that). I think it might be worth doing it for games we're likely to play though. I'd like to see Lord of the Rings Online and Pirates of the Bumming Sea personally.

Investing a lot of time and effort in reviewing COH or EVE would be a little unnecessary, but doing it for something very obscure may also be a bit of a waste. I can see why you might want to review weird games, but I think that, at least to start with, the ones that are more likely to actually be played would be a better bet.

I suppose so.
I had a certain amount of fun running around Trickster and Ragnarok, games that I don't think anyone would have tried unless I badgered them, and I think a Diary of my solo-experience would have allowed me and other 5punkers to make a better decision about the game, before we all found ourselves hitting crabs with drills for 30 minutes at a time.
I'll happily try some popular ones though, probably recording a solo or double-act experience, rather than getting into a huge group of 5punkers.

I played The Matrix Online for a few months, although I can't remember enough to compile a comprehensive diary. Suffice to say; avoid it. It has a lot of nifty features and the plot is quite good but beyond the official events the game is very empty. The missions are all similar and very uninvolved. After the initial "z0mg - I'm playing the Matrix!" moments wear off you will quickly become bored.
And you will get so sick of seeing Neo clones, you will want to gouge your eyes out.

Shall I make a checklist?
I'm probably going to try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Saga_of_Ryzom. First negative thing is I have to download over 6 GB of crap.

I gave that a go when it was in beta, kinda liked it. There was a lot of good in it, but I became put off once I left the starting zones and the complexity of the game ramped up an insane amount, utterly baffling me.Baliame wrote: I'm probably going to try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Saga_of_Ryzom. Might be tempted to try it again, it may have improved over time.
